In light of Tom Demoulin's departure from the Giro due to (unconfirmed) gigantic saddle sore, I thought back to the last time I had one and it was near impossible to really hammer on the pedals. SInce pictures may be NSFW please don't post any between 9am to 5pm.

how do you prevent saddle sores and if you get them how do you cure them?

The dreaded...... I solved when I got them by ... changing from bibs to just shorts ...so no extra pull ...and then lube ... I never lubbed until I got them ... now I lube on every ride ...and after...its the worst thing you can get ... since you are fit ...but can't ride ...

Sho, sensitive topic!

  1. NB NB NB  Clean bib (or shorts if you don't wear a bib for some reason) for EVERY ride including IDT sessions
  2. Good Chamois cream with as much natural ingredients as possible. I use Sportique's Century Riding Cream - It has been the best for me.
  3. Make sure you have the correct saddle for your riding style and the shape of the sit-bones in your ass.
  4. Make sure said saddle is at the correct angle.
  5. If you get saddle sores, lance with clean sterile needle and squeeze the junk out.
  6. Apply a good antiseptic/antibacterial cream for a couple of days.

I generally get sores when I get lazy about applying Chamois cream for my IDT sessions...

Forgot to add...the shorts I used while solving them had the least padding ...since the padding was rubbing me up the wrong way ... lol ...

I put surgical spirits in a little teeny spray bottle, and after every ride, I spray the Gooch. It prevents them, but also treats them if you have them already. Moisturize hands properly afterwards as it will split your skin.

This is in addition to all of the above advice.

I take it you dont smoke after a ride :P

A cold water wash does not properly disinfect the chamois. So I pour some

appropriately diluted Savlon or Detol on first, let it stand for a few minutes

and then throw it in the wash.
