Swimming and I have a love/hate relationship, don't mind open water swimming but I hate pool swimming and I hate laps.

For swimming try and get to a bigger pool every now and then. The difference training in a 25m and 50m pool is vast! Inland guys, once you are comfortable try and get into a dam or lake just to get the feel of it, its a very different world when there are no sides or bottom to stand on.

Coastal guys, there are plenty of opportunities to get into the sea in a controlled environment. Try and get to it at least once before an event. Open water swimming can be very daunting on your first experience and it can really bugger up your day if you are scared/nervous/ out of your depth. Lots of time and money wasted if you don't complete the swim.

Breathing in a pool with lane separators is a different beast to being in the water with the rest of the guys making additional waves and splashing.

Remember, it may not be the place to make up time but it can affect the rest of your day if you muck it up!

very true, this is what scares me to bits. also want to arrange an open water swim with others that know soon. getting better with the swimming fitness, although the breathing still buggers me up badly :( still dependent on the snorkel for the time being. but the confidence is getting there and the distance is also getting much better, swimming every second day for an hour each time.

So I went for a swim tonight and did 1.5 km in 40 minutes, which for me is about 10 ish minutes slow. I was slow however due to stomach pains that started after the 900 ish meter mark. They have been occurring more and more and I haven't been able to properly swim a decent distance for a while now due to this. Has anyone had this issue before?

From what I have read its due to breathing techniques or the lack there of. Apparently I'm not breathing out enough in the water and then breathing to much air in when I take a breathe. If this is the case, has anyone possibly got tips as to how I can fix this?

So I've been contemplating the Midlands Cape Ultra Triathlon for a couple of months now but there is one thing that has been putting me off though. Is this even legal from CPA point of view?

yikes sounds serious! from the looks of things breathing technique is everything in freestyle swimming.

My shin are killing me, even on the smallest runs. Yesterday i did 40min on the treadmill and had to stop because of my shins - first it was anterior then i changed shoes and now it is posterior.

Anyone know a good podiatrist or chiro in Sandton area?

Im going to ask the question that most people are wondering...

So how much mileage are you doing? have you increased it too quickly recently?

Shins pain and shin splints are normally as a result of increasing distance too fast.

Its worse for people who are fit in other sports because you can run further than you should be able to.

Im pretty sure the only thing that is going to sort it out is rest and doing shorter distances for a while.

Thanks but been there & done that and still have the pains :)

I started beginning of the year slowly - 30 min walk/run slowly building it up to around 8km over 3 months. The initial anterior pain subsided but never went away.

I then changed shoes, and again started slowly with 2 runs a week and still only around 5km. Now it is posterior pain thou.

During this time I have also done lots of strength training and continue to do so. Just need to shake this damm shin pains now!

Sounds like the wrong shoes, considering you have been taking it slowly

Ahh damn, normally I would have put money on it being progressing too fast :(

Shoes could play a part in it, did you fully recover from your initial shin pains?

I have had them on and off for years, and I didnt find all that much difference in terms of shoe changes, so wouldnt be much help.
