Cyclists flying overseas with bikes on Emirates

Not International but Safair locally charges R280 for a bicycle one way and you can pack 4 x CO2 canisters.

Ja. Coz there's a co2 bomb under every seat. How do they think the life jacket inflates? Fairy dust?

 

It really does seem to depend. One year on our France trip they confiscated a bike chain and a derailleur in Abu Dhabi. I did tell my mate not to pack that type of thing in his hand luggage but he's stupid. 

You'll be amazed at what you CAN carry on....

If you going to use your bike backpack to carry on, DO NOT forget to remove all tools, pumps, spares AND empty the bladder...may sound obvious, but I have lost some nice tools by forgetting that they were buried in the bottom of the pack from a ride just before packing!

Travelled to Dubai in December 2016 and had no issues with the bike on Emirates. Had Co2 canisters in my hand luggage and declared this on both sides, again no issues. Going again in November for this.

Business Class or economy?

Did you each have your 2 x 23kg plus the bike?

Economy 

We each had 2x 23kg bags pluss the bike in box the did not exceed the given dimensions (Bike shop owner also uses Emirates) 

The Bike Cardboard Box had 

• Bike
• Helmet
• Shoes
• Tools (Floor pump, multi tool, lube, tubes, 1 Co cartridge (may not exceed 4) 
• 3x bib shorts
• 5x Jersey
• other bits and bobs 

The total weight of the bike box was 17kg and was checked in at the oversize facility. 

I flew out of Cape Town to Dubai and then The Netherlands.

All I took from that is your wife has a lot of baggage... Hope she is not on the hub.

Luckily, she is not. 

And if she asks what I'm doing while on the Hub, I tell her I'm surfing porn.

I have travelled multiple times to Denmark and back with bikes and no problems whatsoever and no extra fees.

 

BUT - I just booked a flight to SA on Emirates and I see the luggage has dropped from 2x23kg to 30kg.

 

I would phone and make triple sure.

 

While I flew multiple times with bike bags that exceeded the size I never paid the $500 levy but the reduced luggahe suggests they're getting stricter on luggage.

 

They've effectively ALWAYS had the right to hit you $500 for excess baggage.

Not so sure about that hey. If that was true I would NEVER have booked with Emirates.

 

They changed the conditions on their website last year around June. That is when the 150cm/piece rule came in to being. Before that it was a 30kg 1 piece limit. The reason for the rule is that they rolled out a new baggage handling plant at the airport and oversized baggage = human intervention.

 

Having said that I don't know of anyone who's been hit with the charge. But I'm not going to risk being the first.

 

Edit. That's just from my previous experience and it's more than possible that I'm wrong.

We are going Qatar tho. The airport is lovely and the prices were great. 

 

If it makes you feel any better I've got mates that have just been on Emirates and they were not hit with any charges.

Which means that if you're willing to use cardboard boxes, you can potentially get two bikes and gear over without additional charges.

Yes it is clear, BUT..... it comes down to the lady at check in. It seems they don't really enforce it.

 

Cardboard box = 221cm (nowhere close to 150cm)
