All this discussion on e bikes and why they should not be allowed seems the consensus

then you get a guy who who seems to be a lone voice says he likes e bikes and he gets burnt at the stake

its just a pity most of the comments are from people who have never ridden e bikes and to be honest based on the talks about throttles etc, most seem to be ignorant of  how e bikes work

95% of e bikes are pedal assist

as you pedal harder the motor works harder

if you slack off the motor slacks off

also if you dont pedal the motor does nothing at all

so if a guy on an e bike drops you on a hill you can be sure he is probably putting in just as much effort as you are and not less

the difference in dropping you is that the extra speed comes from the motor

e bikes dont give you a free ride, they just give you an extra push

660w continuous power is a little more than "an extra push"...

i came across an E fat bike the other day. the guys had just come from a fishing trip 15 km up the beach. now thats something i could get into.

TBH not sure I get an e-bike 'race'. Yes you get to ride in places you will normally not be allowed. But what is the competitive angle? Battery life? The way they work are so different I don't think there is level playing field.

it becomes a manufacturers show piece of a race?

I see the fad(t)bike craze has tapered massively. You hardly see them these days. Not that I'm surprised.

Potentially, but probably not... who knows / how can that be taken as fact?

Spoken like a man thats never ridden one. Point proved  :whistling:

not sure why we're fighting this so hard...

at the end of the day it's all about not being a d@@s.  this is the exact same argument for when a fitter rider wants to pass a slower rider (on normal bikes).  just be careful, respectful and safe.  Any form of transport (hikers, runners, cyclists, trucks drivers, motorists and motorcyclists and yes, even e-bikers) never have a perfect match between the speed that you travel VS the speed that other road/trail/path users travel.

let them e-bikes ride, just don't be a box by passing someone at double the speed and giving them a fright.  get a bell or at least drop your speed before passing someone that it doesn't come as a shock... on an e-bike it's less effort to get up to speed, so one could argue that e-bikers would/should be more considerate when passing a slower dude because losing your speed and accelerating back to cruising speed isn't such a big deal.

To be honest, I'm unsure what point gets proven?

I had made my acceptance with E-Bikes clear earlier in this thread (as well as taking the mickey with those that have sensitive riders on them)

Don't read something in that that is not there. Rather come with a none-emotional / logical argument  why that bold statement should be taught to kids on e bikes as the "sure" truth.

 agree

but older e bikes like the giant with a giant sync drive motor only have 250  not 660

ask any guy who rides an ebike if he pushes when riding or just slacks off and lets the motor do everything

ask an ebike rider

besides unless you have a power meter fitted effort is purely judgmental not a fact

Look at what bit I marked in bold to show what I argument against.

An ebike must drop you with a significant gap before you reach a point where that rider put more effort in than yourself.

But like you agreed, you cant be sure. It is only braaivleis talk then... between ebikers... ;)

Sorry have to disagree.Ebike is cheating and can’t compare effort levels.Did ride Saturday/Sunday at Hoogekraal and Conties. Both days were similar distance, time, ascent and ave speed. One day was on ebike ,next day on normal bike.Gues which one was ebike????

Ego ego ego ego ego......

Almost all 'arguments' come down to ego.

Give it up. E-bikes are rad. Stringbean, you said similar times above? Wouldn't you need to be 30% faster (with a 30% assist) on the e-bike to match effort?

They are here to stay. Okes must deal with it. I think it's rad that more and more people are able to appreciate the trails and the outdoors.

Look at Martyn Ashton?!

But anyway, pffft.... ego
