I am moving to South Africa this August and I'd be grateful to know if road bikes equipped with disc brakes are allowed in general road cycling events, tours and races in South Africa? I am considering purchasing a road bike equipped with disc brakes.

Thanks.

hello Blair.

Welcome to the hub.

We currently do not have any bans on disc brakes.

so just ride your bike and enjoy this stunning country - just be safe.

Maybe not if you are a registered rider with CSA but no issue in the general bunches not competing for prize money.  After all there are always the hard men on their 29ers with knoblies that then fill these pages with stories about how hard they are as they kept up with the roadies. And they ALL have disc brakes.

It depends, If you are going to be racing in age categories, they could have a problem with you racing a disc equipped bike, seeing as those categories are run stricter to the UCI rules (which states no disc equipped bikes in racing groups).

If you are only going to be "Fun riding", they should not have a problem.

Done 2 x 94.7's on my disc brake road bike and seen many more every time I rode. Also in Argus saw a couple.

God forbid - there were thousands of these funny off road looking machines with discs on doing the same races....

Was just about to start talking about finishing the argus on my mtb using knoblies...

I appreciate all the responses. I look forward to all the riding and racing opportunities both on-tarmac and off-tarmac.

All the best.

According to CSA and UCI disc brakes are not allowed in licensed categories - this is based on an enquiry my son took up with both yesterday.

Lets see them enforce the rule. I have only once seen the CSA ladies walk through our group on the start line and it was at the fast one this year. I had folded my number and she told me to unfold it. This was with like 30 seconds to go so she then told me next time I will be DQ'd.

IRONY was most of the VA group got DQ'd that day for riding over the white line.
