Mmm, Berg water above the contour line.

We were there in 1996 (heaviest snows falls). Took us two days to get from Witsieshoek (the resort) to the top of the chain ladder. Whiskey and water from the Tugela, -10oC and a sky full of stars. Absolute bliss!

About the blisters - there are those "corn" plasters. They too work wonders.

No, by foot from the hotel to the chain ladder. Usually a day hike in and out from the car park.

Edit: along the purple line top left to bottom right. The lodge up the dirt road to Sentinel car park. Up the zig-zags and along the contour path to the chain ladder

Sorry

I was being facetious .

I know the route very well and how long it takes.

We always park at the Sentinel carpark and from there its a short burst

It's been a long day, for me.

i also queried it - as you originally said from witsishoek...which is a few hours walk...but from mahai makes sense to do it in 2 days - especially if there is snow

Witsieshoek (the resort) is what I said.

But it doesn't matter, does it?

Silly question maybe

Why hike from the Hotel and not from the hut?

We used to hol from Jhb on a Friday after work to get in before the gate was locked and sleep in the hut.

I'll try find the photos (tonight) to show the cars that were snowed in.

We got to the lodge at 09:00 that morning, to find we had to hike up to the gate. Snow was so thick (waist high), that with every step we would sink to at least knee level. Very taxing on the body to have to lift our legs up at least 30cm with each step. We spent the night in the hut at the Sentinel car park (gate), so we were effectively a day behind.

WTF were you doing going up in that kind of snow.

We were there in 87 I believe it was when those hikers pegged in Mont Aux cave and the snow level was nowhere near as low down as you describe

One doesn't make plans and then cancel. Worst case, we would have done 4x day hikes in the gorge.

Turned out to be one of the best hikes I'd ever done.

I want to get into hiking. Booked Fish River for June 2017.

I want to start buying some equipmentt. Starting with a pack. Im not going to use it more than 2 or 3 times per year. Fish River will be the longest and the rest will be 2-3 days max.

I am looking at these:

spend a little extra and get an osprey. They are tried and tested. I am not familiar with camping and hiking stores in the cape...but this one has the 58l for 2399

also vertical endevours has a whole topic on backpacks too

edit:...reckon that first link must be out of date cos this shop has the same pack for like 700 bucks more...if you can get it at that price then it is a good deal

Saw a few bad reviews on the k way venture - people said its not that comfortable, something about the foam at the bottom not being thick enough.

The Cape Storms are very reasonably priced, wonder if they are any good.

What majority of the people recommend is to go into the store and try the packs.  Different ones work for different people.
