dirtypot Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 This weekend trail build postponed cos Deon is on holiday and his presence is a requirement... What a slacker...
Jewbacca Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 hahahahahaha That movie is amazing. Why can't they build sustainable parks with indigenous trees and foliage after it is logged? Do they nor know that alien vegetation is, well, alien and not meant to be here? I firmly believe this little show of arms is the exact definition of privilege blindness..... What? You're chopping down the trees that belong to you? No no no.... lets throw money at the problem, kick up an ill advised fuss and get support by knowing people!... I usually abstain from commenting on these things but please.... lets do away with this rubbish. MTO should be answerable only to Parks. Not a bunch of entitled dog walkers. I grew up in the forest in the 80's and early 90's. It is time we took the land back and made it South African....... those hashtags though.... hahahahaha
(Deon) Posted September 5, 2016 Author Posted September 5, 2016 My stance is that I have accepted the verdict which was decided back in 2005. It was no surprise to hear that this compartment was going.. SO having watched a few clips related to this, it is quite apparent that in order to drum up support you just have to use a few key words like "rights, safety and shame" to persuade people without any prior knowledge to support their cause. Apart from the seriously flawed idea that people were not consulted (which took place before the felling ever started in Tokai) it really doesn't take much effort to suck people into the emotional frenzy of misinformation. Even the interviewer on one clip, who arrived to get the facts left believing the hype. I did note that a press release which was sent to the media on the 26th was conveniently left out of any publication until the morning of the felling. The headlines later that day were reporting on how angry the residents were... news is obviously more profitable if people are angry. Guess the only real winner here will be the lawyer, even if he loses. And the newspaper obviously.
DJR Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 What a slacker...Ha ha, like Die Muishond, Deon NEVER takes a holiday....he is merely researching ancient Roman mtb trails!
jimmy hardtail Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 I suppose that because"our"trees were cut down on the mountain a while back we have accepted all this already. It just amazes me that no one seems to realise that the trees are there for profit and always have been. Its like going to Groot Constantia and protesting when they want to harvest grapes because it looks ugly having empty vines
JustinCPT Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Just want to enquire about this statement ?Are they really ahead of schedule ? Does it include the Blue-gums ? http://www.capetalk.co.za/articles/16201/pine-tree-felling-underway-in-lower-tokai-forestThey have a schedule for clearing, and the fires accelerated clearing. They started in the upper Tokai areas...they are ahead of schedule and are now moving into the rest of Tokai and Cecelia forest to complete their harvesting schedule.— Gavin Bell, Area Manager SanParks

(Deon) Posted September 5, 2016 Author Posted September 5, 2016 If you mean the gums in the My Roots/Your Roots area then no they are still standing. That was awarded to a sub contractor if memory serves. (Also important to keep in mind that the exit lease states that the trees must be removed by 2024, not in 2024. It is at the discretion of MTO as to when, and the affects of the fire is now driving the pace.)
Eddy Gordo Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Ahh, I finally watched the video. Someone mentioned something about shade and ho hot it gets. This is my concern as well in upper tokai, but well, as long as there is place to ride, I cant be bothered. Hell the fynbos will be awesome. Then someone mentioned how hazardous fynbos is with fires, pines are too!!!!Someone also mentioned something along the lines of a place with biodiversity and walking space and community space etc. Years ago Silvermine went through some intense felling, most of the fynbos has been restored. Now we used to go there alot. There used to be tons of braai places. I am sure all the diff hiking trails are still there. However now you can only braai at the dam. This could be a serious concern - shrinkage of usable space that is

It is easier to manage access to the dam as they have men on duty there every day. You are also only allowed to braai there in winter now..... so it kind of eradicated the point! My suggestion would for these poor souls to chat to parks and use their influence, money and good intentions to turn lower Tokai into an indigenous garden and maybe even educational area for their children. Walk ways, bridges and open sections combined with the natural fauna which is supposed to be there. Also maybe hire ADT to patrol the area if you are concerned with safety? 7 zar a week from each of the protesters should cover it. It just seems there is an attitude that someone always has to be wrong and to blame, instead of everyone pooling resources and working together to make new things better.

R50k every month should be more than enough to get a dedicated patrol with some pretty good tech. Drones with IR cameras for night-time patrolling (far better use of manpower when you can see what you're supposed to be monitoring) and so on.

Maybe they could even get kirstenbosch involved in setting it up

Drones with IR cameras for night-time patrolling (far better use of manpower when you can see what you're supposed to be monitoring) and so on. Drone would solve a lot of issues from a patrol and security point of view, but SAN Parks don't allow them: No drones may be flown over the Park for either recreational or commercial purposes. https://www.sanparks.org/parks/table_mountain/tourism/activities.php
