Converting others' Strava rides into Edge 500 Courses

So my old Edge 500 only takes tcx files (and not even all of those seem to work) - anyone successfully and consistently converting Strava rides of others into Edge 500 courses?

I have managed to do it with a few rides but the Garmin doesnt handle it too well. Been lost more time than i care to remeber. Following so hopefully someone can tell me where i am going wrong.

This is what works for Edge 520, maybe try similar process...for Edge 500 and TCX files.

Download from Strava and save GPX file

Use www.gpsies.com to convert to GPX track or TCX .

Import as activity into Garmin Connect and then save as course.

I just had a look at gpsvisualizer.com and see that it doesn't do that conversion either, I will have a dig around, I may be able to do it with an opensource GIS software package, if so will post a how to, but give me a few mins to have a look...

As JCVenter mentioned use www.gpsies.com works a treat for me everytime ... convert to TCX or GPX track

Thanks - but I tried that on Strava and it didn't work - anyone else managed to go direct to TCX from Strava?

Export the file from Strava, then import into Ridewithgps.com

 

It has an export function in TCX, and instructions on how to export for you specific unit.

 

I do all the planning for my club's rides (Road and MTB) and works 100%.

If I am correct you can just drag/copy the TCX file to your Garmin on a computer into the NewFiles directory and next to time you switch it on it will import it ... also I don't think the 520 has 'turn by turn' directions but I could be wrong

Thanks - when I drag tcx into new files it just disappears after the next power up, and no courses added
