I'm struggling to swallow the ski boat hooked onto the trailer on the back of a VX 200 never mind the hook, but yeah I owe Tube a bottle or 2, maybe even more at the finish.

Passionate is a understatement, it runs deep in the veins frozen solid to the core, the fire deep within is lit and the urge to race is getting bigger, I might just succumb to the pressure and pitch up on the 12th........

Boersuen, nou moet jy ry. Die Ingelsman het ribbe gebreek hy't so hard gelag!

(Which for the Ingelse means 'Son of farmer, now must you ride. The Englishman fell and hurt his ribs" )

oops, I think I need to ease the sarcasm into the thread this year - yes guys I was totally joking.

What the race does say is "Adventure Guaranteed" there's just no telling when YOU decide to make it happen.

Serious kudos to Mark Leisher, it seems he has 'the stuff', being tested on Day1 is a real test. Look at him go today - that's what its all about.

Philip Fullaway is another - last year he couldn't have found Nkaaandla or Centacow if you promised him a tender. He bailed at the top of mountain above Rhodes in a hissy fit (apologies Philip but that is what it was). This year he seems to have resolve, direction and we know he has an engine. This year, he's done a solo wander, slashed a tire, got a replacement and is seemingly unstoppable to Rhodes.

Around 30 people attended the two Gauteng navigation workshops last year in November.

About 75% of them are doing one of the various Freedom races this year and several of the attendees were experienced RASA riders, showing how much they value navigation prep.

Philip was one of them who came to learn more - delighted he's going so well this time.

Apart from basic navigation knowledge a lot of emphasis is on proper preparation which is my guess why navigation has gone so well this year (touch wood). Better preparation.

It might get very interesting if I find myself on the start line on the 12th without any maps, Picasso, Picasso my way to the finish..........

Just as a matter of interest for guys doing and prepping for these events.

The NGI will give you digital copies of all the 1:50000 topo maps for free, you just take a hard drive to store it on and they copy it accross(take a flask of coffee for while you wait).

Go get them, print sections out at home and go do rides out in the farming areas navigating new and unridden routes. We often do it starting at Van Gaalens and head West, or start at PTA East/Bronkies and ride those areas.

It is a lot of fun, costs just printing which you can print just sections on A4 and stick together. Then with an opensource GIS program like QGIS you can then open your GPX file and the maps from NGI and see how close you were to your ideal route.

Your Navigation will improve with practice...

Please do that . Do you really thing all us dot-watchers want to see people following the route perfectly every day . Then they might as well put trackers on the Argus riders and we can follow their progress .

Massive cold front coming through Cape Town tonight and tomorrow. Wonder what that is going to deliver to the first couple of batches when it gets further inland. Good luck all.
