Hout Bay Incident: Do you know this cyclist?

The last couple of years in SA I also reverted  to doing that. Also when dealing with irrate motorists, I have found that a friendly wave out of the blue also tended to take the wind out of their attitudes.  A technique I also use here in Germany although hardly ever experiencing problems here the most aggresive reaction I have had from one or two motorists involved a little hooting in the passing.  You must see their reaction when you give them a friendly smile.  They actually feel embarrased.

Blowing them a kiss   also takes the wind out of most sails, I found that this makes me laugh, and usually defuses the situation. Less stress to me than ranting and swearing like I used to do  :cursing:

Up in the northern parts of SA I would only advise our fairer sex cyclists to try that.  Think if the guys do it up there things could turn nasty very quickly.  :whistling:

Woah... that was weird. IU let the Hoogies Rant Thread and come into the Hout Bay pitchfork Thread and... I thought it was the Hoogies thread. Jeez guys, don't confuse a guy with a hangover, No coffee and no hope of riding today. It's a Monday.

Sorry, squire, my ability to multitask and my lack of table-top ability are both indicative of my escalating oestrogen levels. Happy Monday!

Nice. As an XC race weapon, the updated scalpel really makes a lot of sense.

Smile and Wave

The best strategy

PLUS

That strategy allows you to keep on enjoying your ride

Enjoyment is the biggest reason we spin, right?

Shu.

I rode From HB to Noordhoek and back & to Town & back on Saturday and yesterday from HB to Camps & back.

Generally the road users along this stretch are very respectful of each other as everyone is out for a good time. The cyclists. The guys out on their Harley's. The rich cats in their Ferrari's & Porches enjoying the great road.

This whole affair saddens me. I love living in HB and love riding those coastal roads. I hope this gets cleared up but based on the general feedback seen on Facebook we are all scum.

I must agree, every really is lekker in Cape Town, I very rarely ever feel threatened except for the knobhead every now and then.

You aren't that chap with the Cervelo TT bike with the full aero lid with a GoPro mounted on top and KOM HUNTER written on his fork hey? Please say no!

My pepper spray is with me at all times when riding, Road or Mtb.

Came to my rescue once on a fairly deserted road when a Taxi started harassing me.

Long story short, after cutting me off for the 4th time, he was stationary for a looong time after I left the scene.

Christ. This short term bravado is what causes major accidents further down the line.

I hope I never end up next to this taxi driver. He'll have no hair in his nose for any cyclist hereafter and will most likely flatten the next innocent cyclist as revenge for the idiot who pepper sprayed him.

Back the hell off and let these morons in killing machines (cars) vent their frustrations at their windscreens iso the next cyclist who passes by just enjoying his day out.

It's the same reason I get frustrated with cyclists who insist on riding over the bloody robot. Its the next chop down the line who feels the pain.

Carry your pepper spray but if you have the option to back off rather then use it then please use the latter.

Hey look, I've used it here at Bloem by the sea (Kei Mouth, some biiiig Vrystaat Boere holiday here), and recieved a few skeef looks, but no fists as of yet. I've found that most people realise that they are being an arse, and take it in good humour.

Blowing kisses in Jhb gets 1 of 2 reactions....

1 - They stop and want to kiss you back......

2 - They strip their moer completely.... and start abusing you for your sexual orientaion too...

Far better to just smile and wave, smile and wave.... :)

OK - usually I wave a  finger.....  and other signs....

Or maybe he will think hard and long as to why he was unable to breathe properly or see out of his eyes for a good few minutes, as a result of his actions.

He took joy out of passing me as close as possible (on a quiet road with few other cars in both directions) and swerving infront of me (without any provocation the first two times) and slamming on the brakes, forcing me to go into the road way to go around him. He did not stop to pick up or drop of passengers.

The third time he did it, I cycled up next to him and gesticulated WTF with my hands (no fingers or anything, I was alone against a Taxi with a few passengers in)

The fourth time he did it, I pulled up next to him and asked him what his problem was. He starting ranting in his native language, with a few choice English racial expletives thrown in.

To cut the story short, he got a good dose of pepperspray in his mouth, that shut him up quickly.

I cycled of, waiting for the repercussions, which was luckily not forthcoming. I carried on for about 5 km down the road before turning off.

I cycled the same route quite often after that, and kept an wary eye on the taxis passing.

Saw the same taxi a few times, but he gave me (and I hope any other cyclists he encountered) a wide berth.

So I guess he learned his lesson.

I do not care who or what you are, I will call you out if your stupidity endangers me, and if you carry on with your actions, you will have to bear the consequences of your actions .

I refuse to be a hapless victim of other peoples stupidity. It is because of all this PC crap, that the country is the state it is in, and people act with impunity.
