Here is an excerpt from a Cannondale Ebike review. Note the comment about turning down the pedal assist to "avoid losing traction" . Thats a euphemism for " preventing roost hitting your friends and also damaging the trail" Or maybe not. I see the potential for uphill trail damage being higher than a normal MTB on an eBike. Maybe that surcharge isn't such a bad idea :-)

Even with those short chainstays, the front stayed glued to the ground on steep climbs. As tends to be the case for E-MTBs, just switch down a level of pedal-assist and pedal a bit more gently so that you won’t risk losing too much traction on nasty climbs.
The motor’s design is fairly open, which hints at a fairly high likelihood that you’ll be spending a while on your hands and knees to keep it clean after rides in the mud.

I also sometimes have to turn down the wattage when tackling loose 'n dusty climbs. These guns of mine should be e-bike rated!  :excl:

One plaas bakkie bike shuttle causes more environmental damage than a hundred E-bikes would. Like it or not, they are here to stay, and as long as you don't need a drivers license to use one, it will legally qualify as a bicycle.

According to one of the importers, according to the letter of the law you do need a motorbike license to operate one.

I reckon when I'm lank old and decrepit I might consider one. Until then I would be too embarrassed to be seen on one. And my mates would never let me live it down.

Call me old fashioned, but the joy of a MTB ride includes conquering the downhill as well as the uphill. When I make it up to the Conters mast without walking, I feel (almost) as good as when I nail the decent.

You and me both... But I am also grateful that I can ride without hindrance. (Making it to the Mast is still beyond me though... Where do I rent an ebike?)

mast is very do-able, when things get tough and you get thor buttox, just ride harder through the pain :P

OK, back on the ebikes in races topic.

Sunday at AMASHOVA on foxhill in the VA bunch I see this guy on his MTB still in the bunch, first thought, **** we are going slow. I ignore it and go on, later on in the same climb this guy starts moving up in the bunch, I see he looks older than 30-39 and has no number on and he is on a ebike. I politely ask him if he is part of the race and he says no... seriously "roof ryer" ook nog daarby! I mean, I paid for full road closure and he thinks he can just jump into any bunch, not paying a cent and cruise along  on his ebike?

I politely asked him to please get out of the racing bunch as it is dangerous, I mean his handlebar was hovering above mine for quite a while. I heard him chirping something along the lines of people being scared as he went back, but my point is, you can train that road, among the cars, on your electric motorbike, any other day.

having ridden 3 Epics, (done some hard yards...) and being only JUST the wrong side of 50, i could not give a toss what others think about me on an E-bike!

Most passing judgement have never ridden one, and as for my mates, anyone 'never letting me live it down' could p!ss off!

To be fair, I broke a leg - badly - and after the doctor 'prescribed' a stationary bike to rebuild both muscle-strength, as well as fitness, i rather (with his approval) electrified and old MTB, and never had as much fun!

I work HARDER with it  - on the flats anyway - since i pedal with it OFF, meaning extra 5-10% resistance (electric motors create resistance) and then there is the extra 8kg of motor+battery.

Its brilliant for commuting; gives me a helping hand up Suikerbossie, and allows me to accelerate AWAY from peak hour traffic when stopped at traffic lights. Downhills and flats, i don't use it, gale-force South Easter, with the CT harbour cranes not working due to wind, I cycle thru the Habour using pedal assist level 3 (of 9 available levels), and can manage the 30-odd km's back to Hout Bay...

then, finally, it I-S fun rocketing past the Lycra clad, neon, advertising-emblazoned roadies on their R50K+ bikes, who look a bit like praying mantis's (!), in my old baggies and an older T-shirt

Life is too short, i tell ya.....  :P
