So there was a middle aged mamil commuting east on Witkoppen today , seen on bridge crossing William Nichol.

Which is great to see , however he had no helmet and had earphones in on a busy and taxi filled route !!

That's just asking for trouble

In fairness there where quite a few sport commuters ( Guys on High End bikes getting riding time) but all others safely and responsibly.

some people just don't care...

There was an oke on Saturday out on the M4 in Durban, showing off his fancy new cap...

properly kitted etc etc, but just no helmet

I mean this road is well know for accidents but it didn't stop him. Why should we bother if he has a death wish ??

Point of order - Middle aged and Mamil is a tautology.

I see tons of people without a helmet - played policeman at Bloemendal on Saturday where a mom was watching her 11 year old on the rollers with no helmet.

Madness.

Asking for trouble were the 2 stupid school kids I saw in Magalies over the weekend. Some local business has donated bicycles to them, the bikes have a mudguard/package carrier over the rear wheel. They were coming down the hill (if you know Magalies you know how sketchy this hill is with runaway trucks and useless drivers who just pull out), one up front on the saddle and the other idiot on the back. The idiot upfront had no hands on the bar and was talking on his cell phone...

I don't see the point of giving these kids wheels if they are not going to receive some education into how to ride safely....not that the bikes last long anway, have seen a couple in *** states and up at the school there are skid marks galore!

They make their own decisions ...

gene pool will decide whats left ...

Worrying, anxiety  and stress can cause cancer ... rather chill and enjoy life ... wear a helmet and live longer ...

This is victim blaming, and another debate completely. In a perfect society, commuters shouldn't have to wear helmets. I'd welcome the day when more commuters felt safe enough on our roads to not wear helmets. Unfortunately, I think the Dutch Utopia will never be a reality here

Point of order noted and I feel suitably chastised.

It's not victim blaming , the realty is the law says wear a helmet and common sense says have your wits about you when cycling in traffic not lost in wonderful guitar solo's

The headphone thing is a real problem and not just while cycling. Pedestrians are often so wrapped up in their own musical world they don't even hear bike bells and shouted warnings. I used to cycle with music years ago. Now I would not dare. Nothing like hearing that City Tour bus approaching from behind...

Couldn't agree more.

Anyone perhaps have any stats of the cyclist killed on SA road this year?  Just wonder how many of them were not wearing helmets and were riding with headphones.
