sub7 Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Hi all,I'm currently looking at buying a new entry level dual suspension MTB and would appreciate some advice on which would be best, or if there are any other suggestions that you would recommend. The bikes I'm considering buying are: 1. 2016 Giant Anthem X 29er at R30k (https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/anthem.x.29er/22201/84034/#specifications) 2. 2017 Merida One Twenty XT at R33k (http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/bikes/full-suspension/trail/2017/one-twenty-xt-edition-6381.html) Edit: Another option is a 2016 Cannondale Rush 1 at R25k (http://www.treadmtb.co.za/bikes-cannondale-rush-29-1/) Thanks!
Odinson Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 The Merida. Better stiffer FOX 34 fork (Boost ook, nogal), better drivetrain and up-to-date geo. That's my Zim 2c.
mornevg Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 I had a Giant, replaced it with the Merida 120. Merida best buy ever. Well balanced bike and goes like stink as well.
worriesnot Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 love my Anthem but that Merida does look good - well specced...
Rocket-Boy Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 two fairly different bikes to be honest.Personally in this situation I would take the merida for the spec improvement alone.
'Dale Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 One more endurance-ishOne more CX-ish ? Merida better value and so underrated
BaGearA Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 I would take that Giant in a heart beat !Nothing wrong with the merida but I'd take the giant . MOre details of the riding you do will also help.
Matchstix Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Depends on what you want to ride, the merida has a trail geometry anthem more xc.
sub7 Posted October 11, 2016 Author Posted October 11, 2016 Thanks for the responses guys. I do mainly a mix of jeep and single track around the Cape...so Jonkershoek, Table Mountain and Tokai (when it was open). The spec on the Merida is making me lean towards it, but then again many people swear by the Anthem. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Tatt Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 Looking at the Merida, it seems to have a full floating rear suspension - big bonus if it is, over and above a pretty good spec on the bike. Tom
Tatt Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 http://www.mbr.co.uk/reviews/full-suspension-bikes/merida-one-twenty-xt-edition-2016-review It is full floating - very nice - I'd buy it just for this! With 120mm travel at the back, I'd eventually look at uping the front to a 140 if you're going to to do more fun riding than cross country marathons... Have a chat to any Pyga One Series or Trek Remedy rider, both have the same suspension. Tom
lerouc Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 I'll chat with oom chris and ask him on the giant if you can't replace the old drivetrain with new 11speed. I bought an XT upgrade kit excl cranks for 3k which is your difference. But coming from a guy riding an anthem if you want to buy the stock and make no upgrades take the merida even though its not the prettier bike but rather better specced.
'Dale Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 Which bike pulls on your ❤️️ They're both a good choice
