#SpezIsGoingToFall Another Loyal Customer Lost

It's not just Specialised..

Had a similar experience with a bike shop in Johannesburg recently when I tried to buy one of their flagship brands (they are a stockist). Their response was "No Brand A's right now, but here's last years Someotherbrand at 50% off, maybe you'd like that instead." Not lekker for a R50k+ bike purchase - I'll always feel cheated, and I really don't feel like having the argument about why their old stock is just as good as the bike I have in my head.

It's a bit like walking into a Toyota dealership and being offered a discount on last years' Land Rover instead. (This is the feeling you get when you get back from the shops and you wonder why you came home with the stuff you actually bought..)

Some basic sales training maybe? Try sell the guy the bike he asks for, or at least talk to him about why he wants that one..  I'm in JHB Northern suburbs, so there are maybe 20 bike shops in a 15km radius. All it took was a phonecall to another shop for them to make the effort of finding the bike I wanted. I'm still convinced I made the right bike choice in the first place and now I have a new bike shop that I like too.

Joe Viglietti.

Another family member is equally amazing by volunteering an immense amount of time to the Table Mountain National Park and seeking nothing in return.. but this would be off topic if not for the chance that maybe there are a few concept store owners forgetting what life is still like down below, that is if "caste" comes into this.

Is that the "old man"?

With grey hairy chest? haha.. no, but I still pride myself that I was worthy enough to shake hands, albeit very greasy, with a family member working on my car among some seriously impressive finely-tuned race machines.. you know, like Specialized.

We've had nothing but good service from the Cape Town concept shop.

The owners are reasonable people, and they're more often in the shop than not.

That's a deadly combo.

Only if you manage to stay upright yourself

Lying on your back whining does your finishing time no favours

Was he perhaps whining cause you were standing on his nuts? He certainly deserves said treatment for taking you out!

Back to the topic.. I was shopping around for a new bakkie a couple of months ago. Amazing how the dealers treated me cause I walked in dressed in slops and a kortbroek. They immediately assumed I couldn't afford their top end models when I asked about them (they were right, but that's besides the point!  :P ). As for bike shops, I guess some days you get good service and some days you don't. There's another thread on here giving high praise to GM in Pmb. I had an incident with them a month or 2 ago which left me less than pleased with them..

This seems to be common denominator when people rave about good service.

It's a pity that a good brand is stuffed by k@k customer service from a single salesperson. It happens everywhere but that's no excuse.

Personally, I've had nothing but good service from Spez Concept Stores in the Gauteng. Sometimes they are a little pricey but MTB parts aren't cheap anymore.

On the other hand, I was worked over by a "reputable" LBS when i was a noob.  They ripped me off (twice) when i didn't know any better.  I won't go back EVER.

No, but after I found I was mobile (since found some cracked/broken ribs) I went accross to him to ask if he was OK.

His response was "does it look to you like I am F@kken OK? It was at that point his bal needed trapping.

But back to the thread.

There was a Spez Concept store doing Tech support at the race and when I discovered 15 mins before the start of the last day that my tyre had gone flat overnight despite me having topped up sealant two weeks ago. They popped some extra sealant in and reseated the tyre with a compresssor. Not having time or cash, they told me to contact them later to square with them.

I did so this morning. Thx guys at Burry Stander's.

Second, a call to my local concept store informed me that my Spez helmet has a crash replacement warrantee and some paperwork is all that will be needed to get a 50% discount on the helmet I can come and pick up as soon as I am able to pop around.

Thx Marc at Dunkeld.

What a dwis!  :cursing:

The tech support at the race was fantastic. Whilst going up Lantana hill someone behind my partner noticed his chain setup was wrong. So he stopped at the waterpoint and they sorted him out quickly (and for free). Other than that we had no mechanical issues but I was tempted to make use of the Maxxis tyre offer!

The S Works bikes usually have higher specification bits on and are much lighter. Think XX1 and carbon wheelsets, carbon cranks etc.... Sometimes the frames are a bit tweaked too. Prices are stratospheric.

Expert level Spez bikes usually a good mix of high performance bits but not the esoteric stuff. Almost same performance but much more cost effective....kinda like the difference between XTR and XT groupsets.

S-works bikes use a different quality carbon and overlay design in the frames. Essentially much stiffer and lighter.

:P

this  reminded me of the bruise I picked up at Berg and Bush yesterday which my daughter pointed out looked disconcertingly like I had had  Goldmember's  key in my jersey pocket.....

Just to give some feedback (and to show how effective Social Media has become), after Patchelicious' post, Spez got hold of me (yup, I'm the 'old man' :) ) and really went out of their way to sort things out. Obviously I'm still 'stuck' with a mint 2016 Epic S-Works but I'll give them kudos for at least taking it on the chin and addressing the situation.

The concept store in question also just phoned to apologise.

Then to add a cherry on top, just got a message that a new Prevail was delivered to my house, compliments of Spez SA.

Issue with pushing a model on the floor stays but I'm willing to give Spez SA the thumbs up for not ducking this and, at least, trying to prevent it happening again.

Kudos to Spez SA, then.

Now, if someone wants to swap a 2016 Camber S-works for a 2016 Epic S-works, let's talk! :)

Well, that's a great outcome, all thing considered.

It is worth bearing in mind what the Romans used to say:  CAVEAT EMPTOR

[let the buyer beware]

Or, if you prefer: beware of "post-purchase dissonance" (what the marketing / psychology wonks call it)

Hope you enjoy your bikes!
