HUB Ethics : DIBS

Morals and ethics within the classifieds among hubbers is what the system is built on. If you see an item and you are interested, then contact the seller but be so kind as to leave a comment on the ad to let other interested partied know that you are interested. That however does not stop someone else from contacting said seller and letting them know that you too are interested. Timeframes are up to the seller.

As already said, it is a 2 way street. Morals, ethics and communication. This isn't Gumtree.....

I AM going to go there: How does this work then? Why 12 hours? What possibly occurs during this highly specific time period?  If someone has the time to browse classifieds, then surely they have the time to conclude a simple EFT transaction?  The only possible delay I can think of is if a buyer does not have the cash to pay at that point in time.  My response to that is TOUGH.LUCK.SUNSHINE.  Give me a break - you either pay up, or shut up - there is no moral or ethical code here.  If someone is selling something, and you got the cashmoney, then you get the stuff.  Simple

Ok, I will go there. That attitude, while you are entitled to it, stinks and smacks of being greedy. This is the BikeHub, and there are some ethics here. Because its not all about you, and not always about money. Not to worry, you wont have to deal with me, because I wont be buying from you. If you are that hard up for cash that you wont communicate with a potential buyer, or wait say overnight for the buyer to decide (as in overnight) then you have bigger problems.

Often, you want to take an item - but need to check with someone else first, say maybe your wife, or an expert on that item for things to look out for when buying second hand. Maybe move the cash from some another source that takes time (overseas say). Often, you know you want something and you just jump in, take it, get the bank details and pay for it. Big ticket items require communications.

And before you get all angry about this, let me give you an example.

I wanted an indoor trainer. I asked the guy for first option till morning. Cash was not the issue. It was a matter of talking it through with the Mrs as she would also be using it, and we would have to find space for it. Oh, she works in the day. comes home late, so I had to wait till she came home later. Turns out, she thought it would be just another gadget that would be wasited and she would rather put the money towards The Munga trip accommodation. I told the seller in the morning offer withdrew. And he was fine with it. I will deal with this guy all  the time.

I will give you another example. I wanted to buy a bike - but it was far away. I needed to ask a mate if they could go look at the bike and check it out. Asked the seller if I could take first option on the basis of someone inspecting the bike first.

There are lots of reasons to say dibs - but again - the key issue, COMMUNICATION. If someone says dibs, they best communicate with the seller, or else the dibs is off.

EDIT: I see Grebel and eddy have also added their voices. The Hub classifieds are not gumtree.

Dibs is a 2 way street. The buyer is essentially saying "I'd like first option, please" - and there's nothing wrong with that, when the 12 hour "rule" is applied.

HOWEVER - proper application of Dibs requires the acceptance of the dibsing by the seller of the product. If they do not accept dibs or are not aware of the offer, they can't be expected to respect it.

That's why, at the end of the day, a PM or a message or (wait for it) a phonecall is always the preferred way of conducting business. At least that way you have made your position known. If you combine that with a "dibs" on the advert, then you're golden.

As long as the seller accepts it, that is.

What possibly occurs?

Meeting up to look at the item would be the obvious thing.

Also - sometimes it takes a while to be able to access funds that you may have put aside. Dibs (and making sure the seller knows you want it / are definitely interested in it) gives you time to indicate your interest and prepare the cash / transfers / whatever. Other times the cash may be at home, you are on a business trip etc etc.

Lets talk about your hub advert (giving you a free bump here).

So will you give me first option, but I need till  tomorrow morning to decide? And if in them meantime another hubber offers you cash you will rather ditch my first option and take the cash ?

Because that speaks alot about morals and ethics.

I've had it numerous times where I've asked for first option, and gotten it - even with other people making contact with the seller and wanting to come around immediately with cash monies to take it.

Holding out and waiting for me to get there speaks huge volumes about morals and ethics, and its one of the reasons that I love buying from the Hub classifieds.

I am selling.

You want what I am selling.

Make contact to discuss your intentions.

Buy or Pass.

If I miss out as a buyer it wasn't meant to be.

If product is sold please close or edit your ad.

if I agree to the option, then that is a binding contract.  If I dishonour it, then that is dwislike, and deserves a poesk lap (for bike cleaning).  If you say Dibs, and I reply with cash first baby, then you as a buyer have no saak, moral or other to expect favourite treatment.  And please, buy the blerry gym stuff - wife needs new t***s

Just add "no dibs" to your advert.

I think it might be good practice to add your selling philosophy to your advert along with your prefered contact.

I once had a guy poo in his pants because he pm'ed me a few minutes before another guy had mailed me about a deal. The deal was concluded before the PMs was even opened....

If the guy takes the time to mail/PM you and asks for a small window where he/she has first option, that is ok in my mind, but then it it mutually agreed.

But typing dibs on an advert is like a dog peeing on a fire hydrant, it is a shallow attempt to try and claim something that isnt yourrs.

Now there's a novel idea

Seriously though, As a seller you need to provide as many options of communication as possible (If you are serious about the sale). IMO the way I see the levels of communication:

Reply to ad, no PM:- i am interested. If someone else puts up the cash though, let them have it

Reply to ad AND PM:- I am really interested and would be cool if you could keep it for me

Reply to ad and an email to seller:- Listen I really am interested but we need to chat to finalize details. Please don't sell it to anybody else

Reply to ad and a phone call/SMS/WhasApp:- I am absolutely interested. If I say I am interested and we make arrangements telephonically and you sell it to someone else, there is going to be k@k.
