Was always going to be a huge task to go from couch to this event in so short a time. That kind of fitness takes a long time to build properly - sure it can be done if you have the genes but for most people it's a year project I reckon.

Maybe I should follow my own advice about making bold statements on the hub, but I politely wish to disagree with you I think the time frame allows for even a fairly average joe to build the required fitness.

It would required a well structured program and anout 6-8 hours a week. Reason I am saying this is that I took a break from training last year after TD. I did absolutely nothing until 2 weeks before 947.

I started training again in earnest early December, and I am quite sure I could complete C2T at the moment, not saying I would set any records but I would certainly finish.

I am also pretty sure when it comes to V02max I am a geneticlly very medicore. The only stumble block Vlad here had was what trips most in the quest to supreme fitness, and that is commitment over time

How many years of training before your break?

Vlad broke the contract.

In his OP he sought hubber support and encouragement, which he got, and would have continued to receive.

In return he undertook to provide regular updates, which, to my mind, he should have given irrespective of whether or not training for the event went South.

About a year of daily rides + some bigger rides on weekends. Bit of club rugby for the years before that, fairly serious varsity rugby and water polo before that, bit of everything sports wise at school before that.

Oh S#*t I am making your point for you here arent I?

But also bear in mind the OP had some traithlon background as well.

Long story short was hoping the guy makes it despite all the snide remarks I have made here to the contrary

Ha Ha - Ja - I mean he could have done it maybe - would have taken a massive commitment. I just think it was always unlikely given the lack of a solid base of training over a long period.

I hope so ... what a coup that would be

Maybe he's being deliberately quiet only to bounce back and surprise us all with a pic of him at the finish line.....

Well as he was on BikeHub on 11 April, he's still 'around'. Here's hoping we get a happy-ending with this story. Go PV!

JIP ! !

Race or no race .... HOPE he hangs in there and improves his general health.

In all fairness with 125kg starting weight you could have been a previous winner of the comrades and it wouldnt count for anything!!

Okay so I want to Hijack and revive this thread with an ambitious goal of my own. Last year around this time we all watched and followed Vlad's progress on his goal. From about April this year for no other reason than sheer lack of motivation I have stopped training.

I started smoking again and weight has headed north for some time now. Currently sitting at about 148kg (on a 2.08 frame so about 35kg overweight) Fitness is virtually zero.

Now for the goal, I will take the same race Cullinan to Tonteldoos, I want to complete the ride (hopefully in a respectable time) and reach goal weight (112kg) by April.

I will start to train in earnestness tomorrow. Will also post weight and other stats on a weekly basis.

Wish me luck!
