Numbers that confirm what we all know.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-related_death_rate

Globally 5% of road deaths are cyclists. in ZA I''m pretty sure the massive majority are pedestrians.

South Africa statistics are very skewed by 2 almost unique factors:

  • Pedestrians
  • Mini bus taxis carrying more people

In 2013/14 cycle deaths accounted for just over 2% of all road fatalities, significantly lower than the stats you quoted.

However this is skewed downwards by:

  • the incredibly high pedestrian fatalities which is way out of proportion compared to worldwide stats
  • lack of cycling culture where far fewer workers cycle as a means of transport
  • impact of multiple deaths in accidents brought about by relatively good roads encouraging excessive speed in taxi mini buses

It is estimated by sources at the Department of Transport that as much as 20% of TOTAL road deaths are not reported as road deaths, being pedestrians being struck be vehicles but not succumbing at the roadside and dying later. In a country with close to 20,000 reported deaths a year the numbers are actually even worse.

Alcohol plays a huge role in the total number, not always the driver but a huge chunk of the pedestrians too.

Surprisingly the majority of cycling deaths occur in rural areas, not the major cities.

However, the stats are not source of comfort or achievement as a nation. It's not as if we kill less cyclists. We just kill way more others on the roads.

Strangely I see just as many older people (mostly woman) texting whilst driving.

What grinds my gears even more is people who have the phone on speaker in front of their faces. This does and mean nothing other than making you look like a ******* moron.

Yes and sometimes they drive expensive cars you'd thought would be equipped with Bluetooth...

Bru I don't mind who gets to work first. Personally I never want to get there. Traffic is heaven in comparison.

And I use heaven in a totally non-theistic sense. Just because it ain't Friday yet...

its not about getting to work earlier. its more about staying in bed longer

Nowadays, fortunately even cheap cars come with hands-free bluetooth kits. People are either just too stupid or too much of a dildo to care.

I think what I find the most frustrating is that it is not about specific groups, it is pretty much from every group.

Undertaking in the yellow lane? Not just taxis anymore.

Skipping red lights, stop streets? Just as likely to be someone in a fancy SUV/sedan/doublecab, as a taxi.

Using indicators to show what you are GOING TO do? Nah, too much effort. ( I have actually heard someone say they didn't know where the indicator stalk is, on some company Merc they happened to be driving that day!!)

Oh, and being blinded by super-bright foglights... (some moron actually tried to convince my dad once that it came out of the factory like that, you couldn't turn it off, about his Hilux)

There is just a general attitude of "So what", and a lack of taking responsibility, in society as a whole these days. Just listen to how people justify whatever illegal/dangerous action, always shifting blame to something else - "the sun was in my eyes", "my brakes failed".

I now know why roadies get out at stupid o clock. Generally you're sharing the road with bikers and enthusiastic drivers. Yes they're going fast but they are concentrating on the job at hand.

I generally ride in the very early hours of the morning and usually in groups, going to bed earlier and getting up at crazy hours to ride on quiet roads is a sacrifice I am happy to make to be safer.

That said, few days ago I had a very close encounter with an SUV on the dark early morning on a quiet suburb back road who jumped a stop street without looking (either still half asleep or not expecting someone on the road that time of the morning), the guy even had a big cycling sticker at the back of the car so I assume it could have been a fellow cyclist - reality check again that you are never completely save no matter the precautions you take.

What kills me is the way the majority of older whites drive. We know most taxi drivers probably don't have a licence and we expect *** skills but the older white generation would have done their drivers test and should know better.

Unfortunately we are a nation of sheeples and once one idiot starts misbehaving then we all seem to give it a go...

Mid-morning people are always in a hurry, thinking less cars means higher speeds. Also, less experienced drivers (such as the lady that is a house wife and on a shopping run) are out and about, looking to kill cyclists.

Afternoon commutes home, you have to be extra careful, because people are in a hurry to get home, blow red lights, and taxis stop and ride anywhere.

What if I told you this has all happened to me between 6 AM and 11 PM on almost every day of the week? Would you honestly be surprised?

Nope... I wouldn't...
