What breaks your MTB?

Another one.....cleaning your chain with water and detergents....waste of time. Water gets inside the links and rollers and prevents lube penetration and assists corrosion.

Use paraffin (not petrol, its too unsafe).

My saddle is slightly torn from falls, my frame has got some scratches from rocks, branches and the Thule. My grips have got some worn spots, my chain is probably a little stretched and my front tyre has got tiger stripes.

I've gone through numerous V-Brake Pads and disk pads. Ive gone through cassettes, cracked helmets, BB's, perished light fittings.

I've gone through swamp mud gleefully until my wheels and derailleurs clogged up (when I was still a newbie and had no idea what damage it was causing). I've ridden on the beach, and through the sand trails in Sodwana with deflated tyres. I've gone through hail, flooding roads, Acacia thorns and Spruit sewerage.

I fall into rocks, off bridges, smack into kerbs (coz I cant bunny hop properly). I've been knocked off my bike twice by cars.

I can safely say that all of the above breaks my bike, and the common denominator is me.

But...it makes me feel just a little better and stronger each day I get off my bike. What a privilege.

Had a chuckle reading this.

As students, we would take a 100 meter run-up and checked how far we can ride into the mud/water/muck at the back  Potch dam, before you fell over or the front wheel struck something and you had an ENDO.

Always a good laugh to find you bicycle again under the water.

Then stripping the bicycle down tot the ball-bearings, in the hostel room, and repacking the bearings with marine grease  so that it would "last longer in the water".

Mud.

I hate mud with a passion. My mates know that i will go kilometres out of my way to avoid a muddy route. I had a very long 2006 when i did Barberton, Sani and Epic all in knee high mud. It destroys everything. 8 years later when my brother had my Epic bike and he stripped it there was still a lot of mud in the frame.

Destroys drivetrains, disc brake pads, pivots and everything else.

I HATE MUD.

Did you say you don't really like mud...

Riding on the beach.... I will never ever ride on a beach ever again with my bike. That fine salty sand gets in everywhere and it is BAD for your hubs, BB and whole drive chain...

One of the reasons i will never do the Agulhas MTB again...

Second this......Will only ride the beach with my old spare
