Good day all. I looking at getting a gps computer. I mostly want to monitor heart rate, csdence and speed. I want to use it to do my weekly training rides effectively. The 500 is on special for 3900 with all sensors. The 25 is 2900 with HRM. I can add speed anf cadence for 1400 extra. I do see that that the 500 gives you the option of doing workouts.

I love my 500, had for many years and wouldn't easily upgrade it unless, it breaks completely. The functionality and ease of use is what I enjoy most of this unit, plus it has additional feature to the Garmin25 which comes in useful when training.

I recently bought a second hand Edge810 which is in excellent condition for under R5k...it has just about everyting you need  So if you can find one, I would go for the 810

For your requirements I would go for something in the 500 range. Basic ability to navigate, good battery life, easier to connect and upload, etc. etc. Shop around, you'll be surprised what good higher specced second hand units you can get for not much more than the prices you've mentioned.

Look at what you want to do. The Edge 500 has a lot more features and is compatible with power as well. Power meters are getting cheaper by the day as well.

You'll be able to find a secondhand 500 for the new price of the 25 as well.

If you decide that you won't ever use the extra features and what not the 500 offers, the 25 is really decent-with the upgrade of thr hrm belt at least-and it's nice and compact as well so it looks much better

Edge25.

Small, affordable and does breadcrumb navigation very well.

Cadence is a nice to have, if you see yourself buying a powermeter to the tune of 6 to 12k, get the 500 series, else it's complete overkill.

500 has been around for ages, and you are buying old tech.

Edge 25 has the same old tech, but with added Bluetooth connectivity, meaning you dont need a computer to upload rides to strava ( if you so wish)

I have had my edge25 for two years and it has not missed a beat, I have not thought once that I would like to see more data on a ride.
