Is it really cracked or just surface damage?

If it is just superficial, I would put a drop of clear cutex on it and ride.

That is not a high stressed area on a frame.

I think it's just surface damage. But will get it checked out anyways, you never know..

Took my bike to a shop today, where they took a better quality photo of the damaged area. On the photo it's clear that it's more than just a surface scratch, there's definitely some structural damage. I also spoke to carbon ninja and he confirmed that often it looks like a scratch on the surface, but underneath there can be serious damage.

So, do I repair (and void my warranty) or claim from insurance?

Claim , If your insurance has a excess of more than 15%

The  repair my b cheaper but If you get a new frame you still have the backing of the warranty

Quick update on this one. LBS quoted R33 000 for a replacement frame as the frame sustained structural damage. The Merida ninety-nine frame isn't available anymore so they opted for the 2017 ninety-six as replacement. I submitted the damage report plus pics to insurance on Saturday, and just got confirmation that my claim has been approved! Thanks A&G. On a sidenote, reading through the other insurance threads I realize my premiums are a bit high. R500 for R47k cover)

So I've been thinking.. Do I just go with the ninety-six frame or do I shop around, fork out a little extra and upgrade? Am I obliged to buy the new frame through the LBS that did the damage report for me? I kinda feel like I'm betraying them if I now go and shop elsewhere..

Upgrades I've been looking at:

Tallboy R48 000 (+15k)

Swift evil twin R44 000 (+11k)

Niner frames R46 000 - R49 000

Bianchi methanol R47 000 (+14k)

If they settle in cash, shop around. I was in a similar situation and got settled in cash by my insurer. I shopped around and bought a much better frame 2nd hand here on the hub.

Bianchi and Swift are pure racing frames, so I wouldn't suggest those unless you're racing for position tbh.

But yes, take the chance to upgrade. The new tallboy is VERY nice, and I like the look of the niner. They're a bit short, though, so make sure you get the right size.

What about a Transition Smuggler or Banshee Phantom? Camber? The Banshee & Transition are rocket ships, fwiw.

I'll have a look at your suggestions, thanks! It's not like I've got cash lying around, but I guess this is a good opportunity to upgrade for a little less...

Tallboy all the way!!! and defiantly shop around I'm paying R700 p/m on a 150k bike.

It's quite a good premium that you are paying. The OP does pay way to much imo, but it's because of incidents like this that insurance on bikes are getting so expensive.

more and more people are getting carbon frames and a small crack like this can easily be a R 15k claim at least, up to R 80 000+ (frame only) whereas the same crack on a steel or alu frame would have just require a paintjob at worst.

Add to this the increase in crime and it's quite understandable that premiums are getting so ridiculously high.

ps, sorry for the hi-jack.

Disco tried that with me, but then I asked if Polyfilla had the same warranty as my Spez had and they had to admit no, Polyfilla only has a 1 year warrantee. Now I am really enjoying my lifetime warrantee Cannondale!
