The link to the 2015 road traffic report. Makes for some sickening reading.

8.5 Number of Fatalities
Over the 12-month period from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2015 the number of
fatalities increased by 242 (2%) from 12 702 fatalities over the same period the previous
year to 12 944.

Some graphs from the report - 320 cyclists in 2015.
Perhaps this number is not important to the RTMC and Dept. of Transport, when compared to the number of fatalities in the other categories. While it is considered unthinkable by the cycling community and the 320 families affected.

That figure will only mean something if you compare to how many people in SA actually do cycle in SA. In SA a very small part of the population are cycling.  Propably only a fraction of any EU country.  To get relevance is would be interresting to see say per 100 000 people per country how many cycle and then how many of them get killed.  Then only will you realise how big the problem is.

I agree, there are a number of sub categories under cyclists, i.e. commuters only (including school kids), professionals out training, amateurs training and/or commuting. The bulk would probably fall under amateurs training, and only at certain times of the day/week. So the figures can be presented in many different ways.

For me, the concern is that Government is not doing much, period!

They make a hoohah over the Easter and December holiday periods, yet the figures for the other months are just as high.

There are a number of organizations/campaigns trying to raise awareness, with little or no success, e.g. Arrive Alive.

Go see my first post in this thread.  Roundabout page 3 I think.

We have addressed the stats over the year as well earlier.  There has been many campaigns but to no or little avail.  Arrive Alive is a farce. A waste of taxpayers money.  According to them you just must not drive too fast.  They are not addressing the real problems.

Saw a taxi today coming towards me, fully of pax, with the rhs front wheel running about with a toe out angle of about 10 deg  ie point the opposite way it was travelling. Madness.

Which leads me to another bitch session about the Jhb Metro Cops. Spent 1/2 the day on the road on  Friday around Jhb. As I was threading my way on the back roads of the 'burbs as I do to try and avoid other traffic and stress, abidingly stopping at Stop Streets and Traffic Lights (unlike many others it should be said) two young guns in a Metro Cop Car pull me over on a leafy avenue, lights flashing, siren and all. What did I do I asked myself...The doods strut to me from opposite directions. with their bestest meanest SOB faces, hands on their belts like frigging cowboys, I maintain a poker face and my cool whilst they check license disk and my drivers, and after a staring match they wave me on. No road worthy or lights check, zilch. What's the deal there? intimidation? racism?

Later during a traverse on the N14 from Kya Sands to Centurion, on a beautiful Friday afternoon, they have set up roadblock, luckily for me in the opposite direction. Tail back of about 6 k's, No problem to them that they are wasting so many peoples time. Why do they do this? Because they can.

All whilst there is total mayhem on the roads elsewhere. They have seriously lost the plot in terms of their core missions, which should be (inter alia) :

- Ensure safety on the roads for all;

- Keep the traffic moving efficiently.

I saw a taxi once who's front and rear wheels were not in line with each other. It was crabbing along the road.

Only one !?

See this a few times a week. Trucks also....

To the idiot cyclist in the white and grey kit on the white Trek road bike riding on Pres. Fouche' heading south towards Hans Schoeman this morning...... spotted at 05:40am (you would have started earlier) riding in the twilight and drizzle with no light.

Are you aware that you rode right past the spot where a cyclist was killed in a hit and run a month ago? What were you thinking?

I hope you made it home safely and have seen the light!!!

There was a group of cyclists heading down Brackenfell Boulevard today at 7:30 with a Toyota Tazz as a "safety" vehicle.

Most of the riders were riding as far left as possible except the front two, who thought they had the liberty of the left lane and were somewhat unpredictable.  From my car I gestured that these two should move a bit to the left, which, of course, was greeted by less than friendly hand gestures.

Guys, you are putting your lives in danger and you'll want to cry if there's an incident and ask what the PPA and City of Cape Town are doing, when you do not take responsibility upon yourself to cycle safely and hold your line.

Or we can do as the PPA suggests and not go outside. Rob is going to love this one ????

If the PPA ran an anti rape campaign:

"Dear Rape victims, maybe you shouldn't wear skirts and walk around after dark"
