MTB on tar - Why?

Just a quick rant....

Why would you want to ride on the tar road, with your mtb, when there is more than enough dirt verge next to it? Surely MTB races are on dirt roads - train as you race I always say...

No, I am not talking city riding.

Just drove past a large group from CycleShack riding on the R513. There is more than enough space next to the road, but they ride on the tar EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO YELLOW LINE SHOULDER...

The R513 is notorious for the motorbikes going at full throttle on their breakfast runs.

Guys and girls from CycleShack, stay safe. Please. Accidents happen very quickly

On the flipside, is it correct to reinforce the perception that cyclists are lesser road users that should rather avoid roads because they are an inconvenience to proper road users?

This is not about being an inconvenience to others.

I was driving on the other side going towards Harties - they were coming from Harties towards Pta. They weren't holding up any traffic.

This is a snaking back road with no yellow shoulder. The motorbikes and cars take chances on this road. They do not anticipate any cyclists (less a group of them) on this road. It is irresponsible to be riding in the road.

I live down that road and ride it regularly. Hell, I even built a singletrack on my property, and set out a 15km loop around nabouring properties, to stay of it!

Point is, anticipate the worst and prepare (act) accordingly

Should your question not be " why do motorbikes and cars take chances, endangering other road users"?

Why do you think the Think Bike campaign is a failure? Because everyone has to think for motorbikers. They can't think for themselves. The best alternative then is to keep yourself from harm.

I think his point is that on this forum there is a better chance that the cyclist will read what he is sharing. If it was primarily a motorcycle forum he would be talking to the motorcyclist.

Also my view is that he is not in anyway making excuses for the cars and motorcycles. Think someone has mentioned it a few times, just because you right does not make you any less dead.

Following the path of least resistance. Its a mountain biker thing.

I hate riding my mtb on the tar.  It feels so slow compared to the road bike. Actually it sucks. Plus you wear all your knobblies off

I need to ride about 600 meters of tar from my house to where the trails start and that is enough!

I use tar often....to ride to the trails. I'd rather do that than drive to them!

That is understandable.

This was a group on a training ride. There are no trails around

And the guys on the road from Northern Farm who insist on riding on their MTB's in the road.

But then again i stopped ranting about the idiots who ride in to oncoming traffic as they maintain its safer.

Darwin had a lot to say about what happens when people think its a great idea to do stupid things, and how they get removed from the gene pool because of it.
