Hi

I need some advice. I need a bike with a Medium Frame and prefer a 29er. I have a limited budget of R5000.

Any suggestions on what I should buy?

Thx

Nathania

There's a good selection of second hand bikes in the classifieds here. You will get better quality for your budget.

Just be aware that you still need kit (helmet, Jersey, shorts, gloves) so you need to factor that into your budget too.

To be honest, for the budget you have you are going to struggle to find a good 29er. Consider having a look at a 26er - you will get a very well specced bike at that price. They may not be the in thing anymore, but that doesn't mean that you will have any less fun on one!

My cycling partner still rides a 26er, and does 3 or 4 multi day stage races on it every year, and leaves many guys on their 29ers in his dust. He had a similar budget to yours and landed a Specialized Epic specced with Shimano XT and XTR components, Mavic wheels, and Fox suspension front and rear. For the same budget I doubt he would've gotten Shimano SLX on a hardtail if he went 29er.

Cycling blows whatever budget you allocate it ... particularly mountain biking because the parts are subjected to so much wear and tear.

Bike

Bottle holders (if it doesn't have)

helmet

shoes

a pump

spare tube

Saddle bag - some will frown on this

Multi-tool

shorts with chamois

the list goes on and on and grows the deeper you get into it.

WORTH EVERY PENNY and who said the kids need tertiary education?

Hi

I stated out the other day. I set out with alerts on Gumtree and Olx. I investigated each bike in my R6000 budget. Reviews etc and this forum. I then focused my alerts on one or two. Eventually I found a Sola 4 at R6000.

I don't need the fancy clothes but got all my necessary items from AliExpress. Cheap but takes long to get here. Cloves, shirt, tools, cycle under pants etc. Pump, patch, helmet locally.

Welcome to the never ending shopping experience. Maybe save a month or two longer and look for a bike that is more along your lines with decent specs. That way you will save in the long run.

I have ridden road for nearly 20 years but want to go ride some trails in Cape Town after the Argus so looked around here and Gumtree, Olx etc and found a Scott Aspect 26 er with hydraulic discs, 2 years old but ridden twice and parked...in MINT condition...paid R3k. Good deals are out there and a 26er is still very good to ride.

I would have to agree.  For the limited budget, you will get a much better 26er than 29er.  And for starting out, it is a great way to get a very good bike for a lot less.

This is good advice.

Its hard to hold off a bit longer but in the long run it does save you money.

Try looking on Gumtree and the BikeHub classifieds.

My girlfriend got a Giant Revel 29er for R5500 about a year ago from a guy in Brackenfell selling on Gumtree. It's a really nice bike.

You don't need cycling shoes. All you need is the bike, water bottle, pump, helmet and repair kit with spare tube.
