Event Name: FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic
When: 3 June 2017
Where: ATKV, Buffelspoort, North West
Category: MTB

The FNB Magalies Monster provides all the hallmarks of a truly South African mountain bike race, namely; stunning scenery, technical riding, a challenge tough enough to make you sweat, but not cry and the sense of accomplishing something unique – you are, after all, riding through an area that was formed 2 billion years ago when vast quantities of molten magma welled up from the earth’s inner core depressing the centre of an ancient seabed and thrusting the rock edges upwards. The event is affectionately named after the “Monster”, a gruelling 9km climb up the northern slope of the Magaliesberg which riders of the 70km route encounter. The Magalies Monster gives riders the chance to experience the real beauty of the Magaliesberg Mountains and the amazing rock formations of the area. Riders race through pristine vegetation and are awarded magnificent views of the Buffelspoort Valley in the heat of the race. A hugely popular event on the MTB calendar, conquering the Monster is seen as a real accomplishment in the world of Mountain Biking.

The FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic is ideal for all mountain bikers. Entrants can choose between a 15km Fun Ride, the 35km ‘Half Monster’ and the 70km ‘Monster’.

I'll be doing the 35km with the wife this year. It will be her first one - she's done a couple of Trailseeker 20km's so this will be a big step up for her...

Any advice on how to help her get to the finish line?

My advice would be to let her do the pacing, since she is the weaker rider. Don't try and set the pace, as she might end up bonking a long way from the finish line. Take it easy, stop at all the water points, eat and drink a lot, but not too much and break the ride up into smaller segments and take it step by step. It's going to be a tough one

^^^^ This -

Theres a massive difference between the 20km TS and 35km ( thought it was 40km) think there is 800m of ascent . Slow & steady wins the race in this scenario. Stop & eat and drink every watering point .if she needs a rest take in the scenery, it's gonna be a tough day for her . Kudos for doing it and best of luck, just enjoy the time together.

Thanks Rick & Pikey!!!

I've done the 70km the last couple of years, but my wife has only started cycling recently. I need to make sure how to mange the additional ascent. Distance wise she should be fine but I know the extra ascent is what she is going to find very tough...

It would probably be better to walk some of the climbs rather than destroy the legs by trying to ride them as far as possible...

100% if she kills her legs she will hit the wall.

How technical is the 70km?!

Trying to convince my wife - who only did Cradle Quest Challenge (1st women) and Sani2c (3rd mixed) - to do this one as she's a good climber.

Can be hairy, seen some big falls on this race. The decent after the monster was a problem but I think they remove some of the sections. Has been 5 years for me.

Dont think it's to technical . The fast decent after the monster climb is wide enough to go at the speed that makes you comfortable. Haven't done it for 2 years now,but can't remember any really tech stuff.

I agree, not too technical, but very bumpy! Awesome race though, it's a proper challenge.

It really isn't technical. Your only challenge is the trails are rocky and loose. There are no drops, jumps, etc. that you and the wife will be forced to negotiate.

She will enjoy it ,if she climbs well .Nothing that cannot be walked .If she knows how to use her brakes she will have no problem completing the event

Exkuus tog but I reckon the combination of rocky and loose does qualify as technical. I for one find that much harder to ride than drops etc on smooth surface.

Do agree the 70km monster is a proper challenge. Biggest mindwarp to me are the energy sucking sandy and grassy patches after you have done the monster. Don't for a minute think you're done when you made it to the top
