I just read the rules for the first time; what a Laugh! How can anyone take all of it seriously? And if they do, surly they also have a carrot stuck up their ass or maybe that's a way to get more roughage into your system -  i need to reread 'the Rules' and check. Yes some of the rules make sense but others are out right hysterical.

"the rules" on their website may have been around since 2009 ...whoopee for them (and their commercialization of everything worthwhile )

the cycling traditions that they have adapted to their use have been around a lot longer and

lots of those traditions where taught to many of us as junior riders by older riders way before 2009 or 1995

without history and tradition we  have nothing to build on

I asked a cycling mate of mine who was instrumental in getting me into cycling and is one of those knowledgeable cycling gurus in my book.  This was his response...

"The Rules" have been around since before I started cycling in the mid 80's, and we have always had a good chuckle about how true they are amongst bike snobs (like me).

The Velomanati Group (and website) are the ones who wrote them down and numbered them 1-100.  Eight or so years ago sounds about right.   I don't think they claim they came up with the rules, just the first one to number them and write them down. I don't believe they take the rules seriously either.  Just a good laugh.

Good point big tom - the rules existed long before they were codified and depending where you are in your journey with cycling, applied with more or less intensity since, well, forever I guess

Oh no! Shattered, you mean they are not actual rules which govern every aspect of my cycling and non cycling life? Who's going to tell me what to do now? Feel lost.

Those in know know which ones count.  #3? I mean, that is enough said to prove Peter Flax's argument.

Some are amusing, some are just plain stupid, some are complete rubbish and maybe there are only five in single digits and maybe five in double digits that REALLY count. And none of those are above a score are important. Some would say that nothing exists before or after #5.

The rest are for newbies or poseurs to waste time and money on.

I do make the exception for mentioning #51. If you ever had one of those you have absolutely no right to even pretend you know what's what.  Unless you too support Dave 100%.

Jeez.. I'm pretty sure these rules were never meant to be taken seriously. What a whiny brat.

I just read the rules, and thought they were a little humorous. I would not take them seriously at all.

I find the rules amusing and often use them to rag my mates but no they are not laws .... use it, don't use it that is up to each one of us

Personally I, perhaps cause I'm old and not cool, do like the whole tradition of cycling and feel we should respect it

You see, even this is provided for in The Rules:

Rule #43 // Don’t be a jackass.

But if you absolutely must be a jackass, be a funny jackass. Always remember, we’re all brothers and sisters on the road.

Remember, without rules, all we have is chaos. Without The Rules, all we have is chaos on the road and off of it (and silly long knickerbocker socks, also chaotic).
