Hi All

This weekend I'm planning to head out to Meerendal and ride their Mtb route for the 1st time.

I just have 3 questions:

  • Is it possible to do the Epic prologue loop (26km) or was that route only available for the purpose?
  • I have a Tygerberg MTBC permit but my mate doesn't, will we need to buy a Meerendal and Hoogekraal permit?
  • How is the general safety on the routes.

Thanks for the help

Hope to have some fun their this weekend.

You won't be able to ride the full prologue. The non member would have to buy a permit for each venue yes. And the rides are safe - no incidents at all thus far I think.

Don't waste your time with Meerendal...

Go ride Hoogies and buy a day permit for your mate then go ride Contermans and get another day permit there.

Safety is not an issue at all.

Meerendal is boring on the CX bike..... as Thermophage said. Go ride Hoogies and Contermans. Shouls be enough to get a decent grin going

or Morondull as we sometimes sarcastically call it :whistling:. Can you believe that descent on Dorskberg has an "Advanced Riders Only" sign on it.

if your not technically advanced, then Meerendal can be good fun and a great way of getting a few Km's under ye belt, but like the guys are saying, a lot more fun to be had at Hoogies, if you are technically advanced then do the Cobra and Trail Z which are all part of the Hoogies network.  That is some great riding with plenty climbing... Conties is my go to track for a quick hour ride..

I often take people who've been on a bike for a few weeks to Conties and Cobra and Trail Z...They're pretty simple (bar a few spots) to navigate even for a complete novice with some fitness.

We're too hung up on Tygerberg trials with how "technical" the riding is...When it's not at all

Meer-and-Dull.

Bloem-and-dull.

I prefer riding my road bike up suikerbossie than 98% of the trails in Tygerberg. I know everyone who thinks Tygerberg is riding nirvana is gonna slate me but most of it is K@K.

Roughly speaking... Meerendal is excellent for the beginner-intermediate ones.

And Hoogies is a good fit for the intermediate-advanced ones.

They are 6.2142 kms apart though and there is no current linkage.

Also, Hoogies has the Welgevergenoedgenenenen loop which is adds 10 kms of varied single track mostly.

Pack some gels and fresh legs for this loop.

I have done a couple of rides on the WelvanPas White+Blue and Yellow routes. How do they compare to Meerendal and Hoogekraal in terms of technical level?

WvP White as a advance technical rating and I pushed once on a extremely tough downhill corner. Otherwise I handled myself like a boss.

Dude...the gravel road at WVP is more technical than Meerrendal.

It really doesn't have any trail that someone riding a MTB for the first time couldn't handle.

Hoogekraal and Conties for you if you won't want to be bored.

I wouldn't consider Meerendal Intermediate whatsoever from a technical aspect. Form a fitness one yes, but not a chance from a technical one. I'd go so far as so say every trail they have is a green by international grading standards.
