Just wonder if it’s not going to be quite congested on the run route. Potentially 3000 athletes on a 5km stretch of road. I suppose there will be quite a timegap between pro’s/age groupers/decent athletes and plebs

Is 4 loops of approx 10km, wasn't congested last year at all

Yip. Running the same stretch of road 8 times becomes quite mental I found.

I had a terrible run/walk last year, got my nutrition wrong and ended up visiting some dark places  - hope this year is better  :)

Too late to start training?

depends what you mean by ‘start’.

So... time to replace my trusty old epix gear trisuit before Ironman. (While they look awesome, they're not as cheap as they used to be, after taxes it costs way more to import than buying the equivalent locally)

I decided on a one-piece (always found them very comfortable) with short sleeves as the bra-tan is getting a bit old and I want a bit more protection from the sun.

I've narrowed it down to one of the following:

Anyone with experience/recommendations on any of the above? No real preference on my side, all around R3000 but am leaning towards the HUUB as I like the idea of having pockets on the sides of the suit instead of the back where I have to perform my best contortionist/yoga moves to get a gel out

My 2XU sleeved compression suit arrived and of course it had to be tried so put it on for a lil cycle herewith first impressions:

This is my first trisuit and damn I have to ask myself why, why did I wait so long. What a bloody marvelous piece of kit. Fits lekker and nothing moves so I doubt I will ever chafe in it. So let’s start with the cons first

1. The 2 lil pockets at the back are for gels, they are not very deep so it’s possible they could pop out. Because the pockets are small you will need a bento box for the cycle leg, I normally just stuff my pockets with crap but will use the bento this year.

2. The chamois is real thin, wafer thin. Will need chamois cream otherwise it could damage the undercarriage a tad. Gotta get used to it as well I guess.

That’s it really now for the pros

1. I look sleek in it, makes me look a stone or 2 lighter...this bodes well for the uphills.

2. If Geddy ever leaves Rush I can do vocals, voice goes up an octave when wearing it.

3. Damn fine fit, one just feels like a pro in it...and that’s worth 10 minutes alone.

4.everything grips as it should.

5. Highly doubt I will chafe in it, nothing moves really. Specifically got the sleeved one cos I normally chafe under my arms in the run.

6. While my time may be similar I will feel more comfortable in it I reckon.

Early days yet, will do a swim in it and a run at some point.

Thanks for the update, will be going for the Castelli recommended by Shaper and Stiggy; not only because of the good discount (R1900 for the Castelli as opposed to +- R3000 for the rest) but the reviews of read so far seems to be favorable as well.

Agree with your sentiments; I've had a race suit now for a couple of years and they are awesome.

Will report back on the Castelli when I get mine.

You'll be pleasantly surprised how comfortable they are on a long bike, right from the get go.

Absolutely not.

I'm still here on 10kms a week running after a knee has kept me sidelined for a while.

Nope, depending on your current condition etc. Some guys are natural athletes and maintain a good lifestyle so are inherently fit.

If you a couch potato chain smoking lazy dude then yes too late,

IM is about pacing yourself and staying within your limits. as others have mentioned if you cycle a lil and run a lil and know how to swim its doable. the body is an amazing thing.

If you can run 20km per week and cycle 2-3hrs on a sunday, you can start   Got a 14h50m finish like that.

As an Ironman novice who lost a lot of time due to injury and have been stressing balls, thanks for this guys. feeling a lot more at ease now.

Mr FlyingScot knows what is needed, he is not a newbie to this... and I suspect his current fitness levels are better than a few!

I think his only real question is whether he goes with his disc wheel or not come race day if he enters! ;)

Yes. My cousin trained for around 4 hours per week (odd run or MTB ride) leading up to East London. He managed 6 hours and it was only his second 70.3. Some people can just do it with next to no training and lower relative "fitness levels". Just saying 8 weeks left, so no time like the present to get moving.
