Tygerberg trails - newbie question

Here are some of the easier rides around the Western Cape:

Simonsberg Concervancy - Park at Muratie and take the Muratie loop up to Goloolies and then take HoChiMi down. If you still feel strong, go up again and do the Uitkyk loop.

Jonkershoek - Take the circle route, and you could even take the first contour road, go back down the last bit of Neverendingstory, and then on the way out go do the last section of fire hut.

Oak Valley - Do the Blue loop.

Wildekrans (Botrivier) - Its a relatively easy 24km, with a chicken run on the 1 or 2 steep sections.

If you're willing to head out Bottelary way then Hazendal has a very beginner friendly flat loop of just over 5kms. I take my kids there and they love it.

Was also going through the link to see if someone has suggested Bottelary already, and if you have to walk Kaapzigh killer it is not so bad, and generally won't rate it as that technical, have taken our 10 year old out there with no problems

If you're a Club member a great ride is also the Bloemendal Traverse, from Odendal Road Aurora to Bloemendal. Very pleasant mostly jeep track, Bluegums then on to Bloemendal, BSpot and Bloemennice and then home via Race Course Road.

Slow Coach group does this ride for about 20 km trip.

I did this for a cycling "date" with my wife a month ago. We dropped a car at Bloemendal and then cycled from home in Durbanville and had lunch at Bon Amis afterwards and drove home. Win win all round.

Hi, pls help - racking my brains for good places to ride that are easy on a beginner.

Trying to get about 20km in with moderate climbing. I'm experienced, but my partner not. Stairway to Heaven at Meerendal ended in tears twice :)

Any good suggestions? Hoogies/Conties would be too challenging.

Thanks!

Skip stairway and cycle straight up the hill to the single track turn off on the right. It's sharp and nasty but it's straight so she can easily get off and push until she is fitter. We used to do that in the "old" days when that was the "green" routing

IMHO Mineshaft and Stairway are not a green rating.

PS. I need to get fit again so happy to try take your lady round if your fuse gets a bit short ;)

Probably a drive but I started out riding in the Southern Suburbs, Diepriver Trail and Greenbelts to Tokai forest and back. Chilled rides not much climbing but upping the pace until a better fitness level is achieved and the longer climbs out that side may become a little easier.

Sorry just saw the Tygerberg Trails headline :D enjoy

Search for the Slow Coach Group on facebook and let her join them.  The most patient bunch of people who are happy to ride at the pace of the slowest person and offer lots of encouragement.

Koeberg definitely the best for newbies.  Bloemendal's B-Spot is a great way to get used to singletrack, ride round there a few times.

Then if you feel like a nice day out, head to Oak Valley.  Besides the few bridges which can be walked, the singletrack is fairly gentle.and its a beautiful place.

We have all types and all shapes young and old great bunch if you are just starting out!

You can skip the kaazigh killer by going up the pink and orange route still leads to the top just with less aggressive climbing. My wife got on a bike first time EVER age 30 very strong climber but stairway to heaven switch backs she really struggled with. It's easy for us to say ride here or there but most of us can and have been for some time, take your partner somewhere simple like Koeberg and just let their confidence to grow then maybe bottelary hills.

Just to confirm...

As a non-TMTBC-member, if I want to do Meerendal, Conters and Hoogekraal in one ride I'll have to exit onto the road (Visserhok and Conters' road) with NO access to the corridors and the fee will be R150 in total?

Don't want to end up on a photo and hubland tracing me down...

Apologies, just saw the rules below the overall trail map now. It seems the total fee will be R90.

Hi edgarblount

The prices at The overall trail Map is old news.. Go to the part that says Day Passes.

R60 for Hooge in honesty box, R40 for Conties at the Dairy Shed, R30 for Meerendal at Crown restaurant ...

Are you here on holiday..? as they have cheapened the membership for the remainder of the year...

I know it is a complex issue and mostly not the club's making but it is a pity TMTBC doesn't have a straightforward easy system for day passes like say Bottelary. Current system is far too confusing to be practical for peeps that don't know the ins&outs of the trails.

Something else and slightly different topic, have cycled the trails for many years now and have noticed recently that is very rare to encounter rogue riders on the member only corridors, in the past it felt like a 50/50 chance everytime you saw a rider approaching. Seems the culture is changing!

I came across this pearl yesterday:

http://www.engena.co.za/

MTO uses it to sell day passes and annual permits to ride trails on their land like Jonkershoek. I would be stoked if Tygerberg MTB could also sign up for this. People who ride can then buy their access permits on the app, and proof of payment is available on the phone. It could also be used for annual memberships, culling a lot of admin that the club has to do.

I rode faircape on Saturday for the first time, and saw the sign saying if you bought a day pass with the wrist band, you can ride there. If you do not have the wrist band (as a non club- member), please don't ride, but yet they have snap scan and zapper QR codes for payment. Go figure. Confused much?

Thanks T-Bag68.

I'll only be down in Desember. Just trying to gauge if I should bring the bike down, flying and all.

You will not be sorry though, as that fee for a day's worth of riding those trails is still money well spent. At Hoogekraal, you have the original Hoogekraal trail, and recently the addition of Welvergenoegd linking to Fair Cape, making for a lekker amount of riding. (and climbing...)

All in all, I suspect you could put together a ride of around 65 kays on those three farms. Doesn't sound like much, but that is a good 5 - 6 hours of saddle time.
