It was pandemonium at the end, as the number of kids grew really big.

Some tried to take stuff off the riders as they passed. They moved onto the road to be in a better possession to fight for "chocolate". Some a*hole chucked a farbar in the road and we all had to stop for a group of 10+ fighting.

The one that won could have been 16 years old.

no point warming up, the wait is just too long in the chutes and by the time you get to the start you will be cold again.

just train that way, climb hard from the start on a few training rides.

2 aspects to a warm-up: physically warming the muscles and switching on the neurological & physiological system (including up regulation of genes, expression of enzymes etc). Granted you'll physically cool-down somewhat during a break, but the latter stays on for an hour or two.

now it's really going somewhere.

Slightly off topic.... I work in the construction industry building social housing in Soweto mainly in the Dobsonville and Nancefield areas.  Am not in any fancy cycle race am there doing a job uplifting the community from shacks to proper flats.

I walk around the area in construction clothing, orange vest and hard hat.... kids come up to you and say "give me money".... others say "give me job" or "give me one of the houses"

But you are right... it is really going somewhere........

If riders want to give that's their issue and nothing in the rules to say you cant. I don't as I believe it does encourage them. 19000 finishers even if only 10% gave a "sweetie" that will make it 1900 handed out over just a small section of the route. Regards picking up sweets at WP with intention of handing them out, riders behind you that spend longer on the road could end up going without as the WP will have run out, the more that do it, the less for others.

Giving homeless children a sweetie = feeding wild animals???

No wonder we have issues in SA.

Mr Patch...I think you missed the point

There are thousands of examples and true stories out there where kids in this situation have become a problem because they expect to get a handout and even go as far as helping themselves (commonly known as stealing) or becoming aggressive when they don’t get what they want.

Last comment on this, I pinkie promise.

I think people are conflating issues here. Give them sweets, don’t give them sweets. That’s your choice. Do what you want, nobody is telling what to do. I do not think there is much issue here.

But if the act of a poor homeless child asking you for a sweet actually annoys you, you are the problem. That’s my issue. I am not sure I can make it any clearer.

What’s next?

“OMG I hate it when the beggars at the robots sets off my park distance control, JUST as Avicii’s beat is about to drop! Don’t even know why I upgraded to a Bose system ????”

Anyway well done to all of those people who finished, well done to those who enjoyed it. To those who hated the kids, you have a year to go and help get them off the streets. Will be good to check in next year to hear what you did to help solve our poverty problem.
