So just had a Trek Madone '07 warrantied with an current Emonda and the new frame has arrived without a seat mast cap.

The old Madones have a normal seatpost. And it's now it's 2k for a new one.

Is this is line with other manufactures?

Also I've been thinking, are warranties work the cost of buying a new bike. Surely insurance and a secondhand bike it a better options with less fighting when something goes wrong?

So if I am understanding you correctly.... you had a 10 year old bike and it broke and they replaced it with a 2017 frame and you have to pay R2k for a new seat post.  And you are questioning what......?

You got a 10 year old bike replaced with a new one...I think you've done well.

From the manufacturers side, they can't always keep bikes backwards compatible. You can be skeptical and say that there isn't a performance improvement, but that is missing the point.

Thanks for the helpful response.

Really ? an insurance claim over a warranty claim ?? well if you dont mind paying a much higher premium in 12 months then go that route.

well clearly the 10 years of development is not worth R2k.

I guess some people will be never happy!!

If you had gone through as an insurance claim am sure your excess would have been close to R2000?

I think you missed the point here.

If you buy second hand you are losing out on the warranty but the depreciation that the original owner suffered are now your savings.

The comparison between those saving and insuring the bike is what I'm asking about?

Besides which, I am keen to find out what kind of defect/occurrence is covered by BOTH a warrantee AND an insurance policy.

It's a Trek Madone. He paid the premium back in 2007 for the life time warranty that it comes with.

If Trek cannot provide you with a warranty replacement frame that doesn't require you having to pay in, they shouldn't sell their products at a premium and shouldn't promise a lifetime warranty.

Trek provided a frame Gratis, normally compatibility issues are for the clients cost - generally the industry standard is that if a frame is relatively new then compatibility issues are taken care of as well.

if manufacturers were to say we'll cover all compatibility issues then where and when does one draw the line? Next thing is the cranks don't fit, the brakes don't fit and so it goes on...

Same would apply for a BB change i assume.

So imagine you have a 26" mtb, warranty claim and you can only get a 29er or 650b. Now you need new wheels and a new fork. Significantly higher cost to get back on your bike.

Would I be irritating at needing to spend R2k... no. If I need to spend R15k, yes.

Hi Duncan

Thanks for bring this up, Trek replaced your frame at no charge to yourself, in October last year. When the frame arrived you stated you were not keen on the Emonda frame set and would prefer a different model.

At this point you were offered a discount to the frame's value of your choice of new complete bike or a similar frame set. You chose not to go this route after some time debating this option with ourselves and the store the claim was done through.

Referring to Trek's global warranty policy;

The bicycles and parts made by Trek are always changing and improving. Trek makes regular changes to graphics and improvements to technology. Because of these changes, a part replaced under warranty might be a different color from the original bicycle or part, or in some cases the replacement part might be a revised or newer model. When a color changes, Trek might not have the earlier color available. When a frame specification changes, the customer’s original parts might not fit (e.g. a different seatpost diameter). This section explains how Trek handles those compatibility issues.

Frames

Some frame improvements create issues with part compatibility between model years. For models manufactured within the last two (2) years, Trek will provide frame-specific hardware with standard warranty replacement frames. This includes proprietary parts such as bottom bracket bearings, head set bearings, full suspension linkage hardware, cable guides, and duo-trap plugs.

This program does not include front suspension forks or rear shocks. Replacement suspension forks or shocks may be purchased while filing the service claim at a 25% discount.

In some cases, a warranty-claim customer may choose to upgrade to a new frame platform. In this case, the customer is responsible at normal pricing for all necessary frame hardware including front and rear suspension shocks.

Please feel free to contact us should you have any further queries.
