Which exercises are those?

#askingforafriend

Muscle building exercises.

Weights or kettle bells. If you don't want to get big then don't lift heavy weights.

Lift lighter weights but do more reps.

For the record this works for me. I am not a personal trainer.

Also from a burn point of view, try

Fasting rides

Intervals

Avoid trying only one method

Yes to both of those. Also intermittent fasting...

It all cumulates. It also allows you to switch things up and tweak.

Those fasting rides work like a charm. I do it for most 90min or less work outs. Just don't end up far from somewhere if your body feels like having a good bonk!

Done 5 hours on a single espresso. Wasn't too fast, but that's down to spaghetti legs...

The "general" honest response I get is simple, "You build your six pack in the kitchen". I truly believe this.

Truer words...

I disagree. Building muscles is not that easy and won' just happen by itself - you have to consume a lot of calories for that to happen. Add to that, that this is a cycling forum and most folks here are active cyclists, a lot of the 'gainz' will be offset by too much cardio. I.e. you can't really be a good cyclist and a swole bodybuilder.

Have you seen track cyclists?

I agree that becoming a hulking mass will cause great suffering on long rides and climbs.

But I know of a pretty strong and built dude that cycles like a demon.

and never said it would be easy!!!

totally different concept. Track cyclist are not endurance athletes, which I should probably added to the 'good cyclist' comment.

Look at track cyclist and 100m athletes vs the skinny ultra-marathon runners.

One trains for strength and speed, the other for endurance.

Metabolism is an amazing thing..

I weigh 5kg more now than I did when I finished high school in '91

73 then, 78 now, but its also genetic. My old man was a skinny runt in his youth so I have some of his genes and on my old lady's side there is some 6ft plus folk in the family so I have the best of both.

Regular rides of mixed tempo combined with a regular runs means I keep the weight at a constant. Eat and drink what I like - of which there is plenty beer - more than I should to be honest..

Should I follow a more structured training program with a specific gym program I would tone up and shed a few kg's

Motivation is critical. You need to WANT it and want it bad!

Different strokes for different folks

And what if my very built mate that finished Ironman?

It's not that black and white!
