Flying with a bike??!!

I have to fly from PE to Pentiction (Canada) soon – with my TT bike. The 5 airliners each have their own baggage policy. These vary for bikes, from 23 to 32 kg and from 150 to 258 cm in volume (length plus width plus height). My “Bike Safe” served me quite well in previous international and local flights, but weighs 14kg on its own and is 122 X 35 X 96, so well over the limit.

Question: what is the latest make in small/light though protective bike boxes? Where do I buy that?

Thanx

Have travelled extensively using an EVOC bike bag, mostly with a road bike, but will be using it to take my TT bike overseas next year.

You do have to do some minor dismantling of the handlebars when packing your bike in the EVOC bag.

If you don't fancy dismantling look at the Scicon bags https://za.sciconbags.com/aerocomfort-triathlon-3-0-tsa-bike-travel-bag

EDIT:  See bike transport option offered https://za.sciconbags.com/scicon-bike-transport-service

Else many might say just get a cardboard bike box from your LBS (as they generally throw these away once they remove the bike for stock) and pack it in one of those to take with.

This is an informative forum indeed!

We're mostly about the shitposts and misinformation, but every once in a while something good sneaks through.

I vote for LBS to box it. It will be light and have room for kit.

I use the LBS box. Last me about 6 to 8 flights then I chuck it and get a new one. Like you say there's plenty room for kit etc.

I'm sure the LBS box will qualify for weight restrictions, but how about size? L+W+H

BA specs 258, SAA allows 200  and United Airlines only 158 cm!

I doubt

Buy scicon bag from classifieds https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/255361-scicon-pro-travel-bag/

Then take advantage of scicon transport service who will collect from your home and deliver it to your destination.... and then bring it back. They will deal with the logistics and airlines and you don't have to worry about it or lugging your bike bag around various airports :)

Edit: although not sure if this transport service is just local or overseas having read it again... might be worth checking out if it is international

Taking my bike to Durban on Saturday. Got it serviced today and the guys at Freewheel happily put it in a cardboard box for me.

Incidentally, I own an Evoc bike bag, but I always get the sense that the airlines look after boxes better than bags, as you can see any damage almost immediately on the box.

And if you can fetch my Evoc in Cape Town you are welcome to use it.

It seems to be local only, found this under the disclaimer:

The purchase of this service voucher entitles roundabout transport of a Scicon AeroComfort bike travel bag or Scicon AeroTech Evolution TSA bike transport case to and from any event within South Africa. Scicon will pay the associated service fee to Triptych couriers. The voucher holder will be sent details for a contact person at Triptych via email, with whom customers will liaise and arrange the pick-up and drop-off with. The onus is on the voucher holder to arrange details and times.

BA is not strict on the sizes have taken random cardboard boxes with them and never bothered to measure them before. Protect your bike to avoid squeezing of fork and frame put an old hub in them or a drilled piece of wood so that it can't be compressed. Pad your bike extensively with those foam tubes that normally insulate water pipes like this
