People who earn more also pay more taxes, so by default they are contributing more to the country.

I just wish it was possible to have a discussion about this without it always turning into a debacle where people tell other people what to do with THEIR OWN money.

Can we maybe, just maybe keep this topic about bling cycling bits without someone having a go at MAMILs on Lightweight wheels.

Why should you be generous with someone just because they are your staff?

If they don't deserve it why should you give it to them?

This whole 'bakhand' syndrome is SA is really getting out of hand with people expecting to be given things because others have more.

You get me wrong, because I didn't really put my point that well.

You don't have to pay anything above 'market value'/minimum wage.

There' nothing stopping you from paying insane amounts on biketech that is not going to make you any faster. Whether your boep 'deserves' the same aero frame as Froomedawg is moot point in the market economy.

There's nothing stopping you exploiting desperate people.

Just don't be a **** about it.

let me use a picture. Kulubuse Zuma likes cars

he's bought lots of these sort of exotic using money from places like the Aurora mine where the assets have been stripped and staff unpaid.

Buying top of the range cycletech for vanity reasons which could change the life of people dependant on you makes you bit of a tjop like Khulu.

Don't be like Khulu.

What makes me respect your post, is that you are a student, who has started about jobs scaricity, career limitations and challenges faced by people in the job markets, yet you already understand and appreciate how it actually works, even though you are on the wrong side of the fence, for now. Kudos.

It's also a matter of priorities... While some here may think spending R10k on cycling shoes is worth it, I may go spend R5k on a pair of shoes or a R20k upgrade for my car and think my money is better spent (I don't, btw - it's just a hypothetical situation).

I don't think prices over the last 10 years got ridiculously out of hand, particularly in the midrange bracket. I bought my first "proper" bike in 2007 for R19k. Merida Aluminium hardtail (with carbon chainstays), Fox Float, full XT, etc. (The top-end full carbon hardtail was around R28k)

Escalate that with inflation of average 6% compounded and it will cost you around R36 000 today for the hardtail and R 50k for the top end full carbon bike. I can get a pretty decent midrange hardtail (full carbon) for around R40k and if I want to splash on Carbon wheels (not an option in 2007) and go top end, I'll have many options at around R60 to R70k (add between R10 and R15k for the carbon wheel "upgrade"). Add to this the devaluing ZAR (around R7 / $1 in 2007 compared to around R14 / $1 average in 2017) and we are much better off in real terms, you can effectively double the R40k and R70k respectively and buy a top end dual sus bike for the "same" money in 2007.

WOW this topic got derailed.

Unfortunately the world we live in is based on supplying the demand... There is a demand for exclusivity and that which is out of reach of the average cyclist  - and that's why those products exist.

The problem is that everyone wants those products and manufacturers seem to feed the beast by pricing their products higher due to not wanting to be perceived to have inferior products because they are cheaper.

The reverse is often also true where inferior products, that do not have the r&d behind their design (often just copying others), are priced similar to "high end" products and claim similar results.

so we also feed the beast...

If you honestly look at the manufacturing cost of the products on your "average" bike you would not believe it - nevermind the cost on high end products which often cost very similar to their cheaper counterparts to manufacture.

The smaller companies I can understand their pricing due to the numbers they turnover but the big companies are robbing everyone daily in huge numbers.
