well it seems quite easy to setup an online bike shop these days...maybe the market demand will sustain it.

Bike24.com (Germany) no longer ships SRAM to SA (as of this morning, as far as I can see).

On principle, I won't buy a single SRAM (Zipp, Truvativ, etc) product through the normal channels. If the local distributor isn't efficient enough to be able to price the products competitively and needs to distort the market to survive or secure profit margins, they should be doing something else (e.g. working as car guards).

We, as consumers, really should vote with our wallets and refuse to buy even a SRAM washer through the normal channels. Even if it means having to pay double VAT. Put these turkeys (i.e. the local distributor) out of business. If they can't compete with the likes of CRC, they shouldn't be in the race in the first place.

How else will the importer afford his Porsche and helicopter?

Wanted to buy a specific 2x X0 front deraileur a week ago from our distributor (via bike shop). Guess what? They don't have stock. Was prepared to pay their silly asking price, but they don't have one. So what now? Crc has one but don't ship here any more. Now I have to look at some dodgy way to buy from an unknown offshore supplier to ship it and wait 3 months plus for our customs to release it if it ever arrives here.

Dear Cape cycle systems: not everybody prefers 1x systems. As sole distributor you have an obligation to carry stock. Shame on you!

So :

Did the prices came down ? NO

Do they carry stock ? NO

Can I buy one offshore ? Maybe

Will my next build be Shimano ? For sure!

I'm not excusing CCS' uselessness or Sram's high prices, but I can understand the frustration that a LBS must have with the likes of CRC etc.

Sram is setting the RRP and expecting the LBS to stick to it. The LBS is pumping capital into stocking this Sram product. Then CRC go and buy a huge load of stock that "fell of a truck" and sell it for way under RRP and suddenly the LBS is sitting with all this expensive, top of the range, just released a few months ago product that no one will buy because they can get it cheaper online.

oh fuggithotdamn! I should not have dithered on that power meter, which according to a local chapter, is going to cost me well over R4k more than getting it from the germans, landed, at my door. WTAF!

they haven't done so since about January this year.  I managed to buy my xx1 eagle groupset just before they stopped it.

bike-discount.de still imports SRAM to SA

If you can get it cheaper online, then why is the LBS even selling it? This might sound harsh, but I'm a capitalist - if you as an LBS can't survive without (effectively) a subsidy and market-distorting protection, then DO SOMETHING ELSE TO MAKE MONEY! I work hard for my money - no-one says to me "shame, there are people out there who'll do the same job as you for less - tell you what: we'll just keep paying you more and stop them from applying for jobs" - FFS - has the world gone COMPLETELY mad?
