When I wake up for a pee, I force myself to get up and stay awake for an hour or two. Slowly slowly catchy monkey!

You can't train your body to deal with sleep deprivation.

 

Rather get enough sleep and rest during your training[emoji106]

Agree with you Gammibear. I don't sleep a lot (always go to bed late, and get probably maximum 5 hours sleep every night) and during this years 36One fell a sleep I my bike twice. So for now sleep as much as you can.

You can't train for sleep deprivation, but you can train to make good decisions while sleep deprived. 

 

Eating, drinking, navigation, stopping for a power nap. Ill discipline and inability to think clearly while exhausted are what really ends your race.

 

The ability to operate decisively while shattered is something you can work on. I have watched too many guys and girls with eyes like saucers walking around in circles neither eating, drinking or sleeping and wasting precious time.

 

Have a plan each time you stop. Practice executing it so it becomes easy. I know I drink, sleep then eat and move. It is what works for me so I don't try to change it.

 

Other people eat and drink then sleep. But make sure you do it without having to think.

 

Also remember if you stop for a nap, put some layers on. There is nothing worse than stopping, going to sleep then waking up 10 minutes later shivering because you cooled down.

 

You won't get any rest and you will just burn energy chattering away in your bivvy bag

Chatting to the RAF at EA swaziland about training for sleep deprivation and they described training for sleep deprivation is like training bleeding before a battle...

 

I must say one of my favoured sleep deprivation things when on a bike leg is to pull over sleep on the ground next to the bike just lying back on your pack without a bivvy or anything in the cold and you will usually wake yourself up shivering in 10 mins. You wake up wired knowing you need to move to get warm, no time wasted taking out bivvy bags, and you go from sleeping to moving quick to warm up very fast. But use this to get you to a stop or a transition where you can get a solid comfortable hour of sleep each night, you will function a lot better all day on some sleep but you will struggle if you having 2 or 3 10min naps each night.

Well Well, it would seem as though Fatboi slim (aka Vettie) has the jump on the training! Damn those are some big numbers. I mean that low HR at that speed! I would love to be able to do that. That HR would have my speed at like 12km/hr!

 

I was hoping to carry the fitness over from S2C, but that did not happen! Then went on holiday for 3 weeks. Now I sit catching up on work.

 

And then I will have to start training. From scratch.

 

To date the biggest issue plauging me is the bike.

 

I think I would like to do this ride on a 29er, but I only have access to a 26er (Mrs Slowbee wants to use her 650b) - but, money is tight and I cannot buy another bike. I am trying to reach out and see if I can get a test one, or a loan one, even better would be some kind of sponsored one. So for now, its Munga on a Titus Racer X 26er.

 

I start with a 30 minute IDT ride tonight. Vetseun, I am coming for you!

Slowbee you should come on the Mini Munga rides - I did the "8hr" one last week and it was great.  Nice routes!  Not hard to do, just keep the pedals turning.  
Everybody rides at their own pace so there should be someone around you.  I didn't stop at the lunch point so finished quicker than most of the others.

The scenery and mountains out there are great!

Howzit Slowbee!

You will have no problem on a full sus 26er. Don't worry about the bike any longer.

What you do have to worry about is training. 30 min IDT sessions are simply not going to cut the mustard 4 months before the Munga. You need to start doing 200km+ rides in August to start adapting to the stresses of riding day and night. For August start with 6, 8, 10, 12 hour rides on consecutive weekends. If you are not used to ultra distance racing you will need to do some epic rides over the next 3 months to prepare physically and mentally!

IDT is certainly not going to cut it.  

I would avoid the IDT at this stage and spend time in the saddle, lots of time, distance should not be the goal. This will come later but TITS is the starting point for me always.

Build the endurance and not the speed, economy on the bike, learn to recover fast - what to do and drink afterwards, do it again the next day (week-ends)

This works for me and I reckon I could do 10hrs in the saddle at my pace - slow.

Bud, do not let something like the bike worry you or be the reason for not training. Train on what you have and research while you go.

time in saddle is what you need,long night rides ,IDT is really not what you require.Consentrate on long rides and core exercises.

a all round fitness programme is requires.

Had a chat to Gavin Horton the other day. Mental mental mental. Your head is going to tell you all kinds of crap. I must admit that I am really good at mind farking myself. I want to do the Munga but at 80km into the Trans Baviaans, I was convinced that I needed to abandon at once as this was way beyond my means. Had it not been for my good friend Neo Phetlo who told me to pull my finger out of my bum and HTFU I may have given up there and then.

Now I have a massive target on my back..No option but to HTFU, just think positive thoughts and ENJOY.
