Do we help?

It's all fun and games offering guys help and tools, but my thoughts are:

If you are stranded and your tool is not working/broken or you are out of bombs/tubes because you have used all of yours I will help gladly.

If you do not have your own tools or bombs or tubes- you can think about packing them next time on your walk back to the car.

I borrowed a dude a bomb and adaptor. He said he will give it at the end, still waiting.I will physically help where I can but can't afford to juSt give things away. My wheel went flat on the day I loan my adaptor, luckily I only had 1km to go. I do very few races and wouldn't want to have a dnf or real crappy time cos I gave away my goodies to a non packer

If it is a medical emergency and I am first on the scene, I won't think twice to stop, if you are a friend I'll stop to ask if you have everything you need to repair your bike. Being well known to me means I am likely to have the CO2 cartridge / multitool / plug and reamer / tube / power link returned. If you are a stranger doing a race with 8 water points, you'll be able to make your way to the nearest water point for pick-up. I don't expect anyone to stop to assist me and in doing so abandon a good race result, so,unless we know each other well, don't feel entitled to help from me.

Ja tell that to Robbie Hunter. He still owes me two tjoops from an MTB corporate race when he was SA Champ. That Europcar team also cost me bombs and an inflator. I still stop to help though. My lbs's love it...

I always stop and help or offer at least, once with a race I needed a chain breaker and a fellow cyclist helped me out, got his number and returned the tool, all in the spirit of cycling(not racing)

This seems to be a good option.... Help if you can take a second to get contact details and hopefully you will feel better knowing you completed and helped someone as well.

For me personally there is nothing better than 'PAYING IT FORWARD'.

Its what we should teach ourselves and our generations to follow.

There is always that time that you fully stocked with everything you need and then realize you forgot something small.

Mountain bikers are normally out there in nature, looking at the wonderful views and everything that is on offer by mother nature. Lets not forget our fellow humans.

Hopefully next time you pass someone you will think about 'PAYING IT FORWARD'.

I have decided that being mocked about my saddle bag while waiting for the AL start is quite ok.

Unfortunately I ride alone and thus have to look after myself. Generally there is also no-one to collect me next to the road if I flat or similar and don't have spares or a way to fix it. So I am then not sure when I would make it back to the start/finish either.

I carry a saddle bag - so what - I see many other clever people in everything from VA to ZZ I just don't carry a whole LBS with me.

(I think the elites are exempt since they may have rolling support?)

I carry a similar setup when on the MTB also so tend to wave off any assistance offered by others but I have been offered by plenty passers on the road and mtb and that is really nice to hear when you are stopped next to the road or trail.

Still trying to work out why you need all these spare on the k2c. It is a road race after all. There is nowhere that you can damage anything. Unless it was going to go in any event.

Just pick your lines and look where you are going and you wont need anything if your bike was in a good condition to start with.

I was lucky my bike and I did about 6 rides since the last k2c. Put goop in the tyres and spent almost 6hrs doing the bloody thing. All still going strong.

Granted, I have 2 bombs, patches, Inflator, Chain link, Gator, Plugs, multitool.

This is also what we rode back to Ctn with last year and what I would have done if my legs had not fallen off on Monday.

Rant on:

Pick your lines, and please let other pass going down the wapad not everyone has a dual -susser that they want to boil the brakes on going down.

Remember you have to go faster than the loose stones can move to keep control.

Rant off

Moral of the story, stop and help, and request that the helpee pays it forward. (if the helpee does not have spares, give them a polite talking too) I always stop to help, I couldn't give a toss if I lose 5mins on a MTB race, so what, Joe Soap at the next braai is not going to oooooh and aaaah at your 4h35min K2C time.

But if you stop and help, you will be positively contributing to the general ledger of the world and making somebodies day, and hopefully they will do it too.

I would always stop and help if I can. My experience is that those that don’t have spares or tools are normally new to cycling or not regulars at least and they are on a learning curve. I am fortunate enough that a tube or a link isn’t going to break the bank, so I don’t mind helping where I can. Life is too short to worry about little stuff

I always offer to help ( with my limited skills), however I will not hand out my last 4 bombs (I only carry 5). If you need tools, I will lend them to you and wait.

However I paid the R350.00 (odd) for the race entry, I paid for the bombs, I paid for the tools, I paid for the nutrition, at some point either YOU chip in and help ME pay or GET YOUR OWN!!!

Sadly my finances does not allow me to hand out R200.00 extra at each and every race, and if I can I would much rather buy a mate a beer.

At some point people will have to start relying on their own supplies, I have no issues lending a hand, even if it costs me 15 minutes. However supplying people with stuff is not why I attend events.
