Looking at all the variables above, I think some have more accent that others because the watch was not on auto pause?  Walking tends to screw around the figures.

I think.

Look at the measurement error for altitude on these devices, the results given all look within normal ranges.

No doubt riders are getting stronger but are the slight route changes making it easier ...

Had a look at strava for the last 3 w2w and unless my garmin is under-reading elevation, day 1 climbing was way off

2015 Day1 - 74.6km  1582m   Day2 - 65.6km 1276m   Day3 - 74.6km 1117m

2016 Day1 - 63.9km 1628m    Day2 - 66km 1251m      Day3 - 71.4km 1045m

2017 Day1 - 65.6km 1264m    Day 2 - 68.5km 1140m   Day 3 - 69.4km 939m

I thought both Day 1 and Day 2 was tougher this year than last year. Last year some of the A-Z single track was cut out due to a fire so day 1 was a bit easier. This year they made Day 2 a bit longer with more single track.

I see there are fires raging at Sir Lowry's pass. It looks bad and always sad to hear about fires. I assume the w2w organisers and riders are taking small comfort that this was not week or two ago

What's the difference between the 3 W2W events?

Assuming that you're not going for a podium, just the dates and the weather really.

Not much. Only the race has prize money I think.

From what the website shows, the women race is the first one, mens race is the last one... so fun and games in-between.

Can I assume the Pinotage event is like the Sani Adventure event? Everyone said the Adventure has the best vibe!

Seeing as all three are in the same week, weather shouldn't differ much?

SPEED

About as helpful as the entry website...

Clearly you don't live in Cape Town - every day in October/November is a lucky packet re the weather.

Lets see... W2W 2018.

Adventure = first day Rain followed by two days of heat wave...

Ride = First day windy as *&^%, race village evacuated due to threat of fire and smoke due to the wind followed by solid rain overnight that results in stage 2 being shortened due to the mud fest that followed... sigh... let try the race then shall we...

Race = Beautiful  day 1 temperate weather, soft breeze followed by Day 2 which was near perfect weather. then Day 3 was rerouted due to overnight protests in Hermanus...

So yes the same but not

Sounds like a truly eventful event!

Since we can't predict the future, I guess I'll have to pick one and hope for the best.

I rode 2018 and before that 2016.

the vibe is very different. Feels more Epicish. Too many unfriendly competitive backmarkers racing for a top 1000 position. On day 2 of the we had to witness some lady throw her toys out of the cot because her Santa Cruz was getting scratched as she fumbled over a wooden bridge. Or the multitude of entitled okes who felt that walking up a rideable singletrack requires a queue of walkers behind.

I've come to love the smaller events like Gravel and Grape, Greytescape etc. Here the folks are just lekker. Each time someone held me up they politely let me by and the favour was returend several times over. Yet everyone managed to get along and enjoy it.

But, everyone wants to do the big5 and they should at least get it under the belt.

I'd like to do it for the experience and the adventure, pretty sure there will a positive experience for every negative, so I don't get hung up on stuff like this.

Although you get chops everywhere! Some chop at Sani shouted at my wife to get out of their way on the flat single track only to hold us up on the technical downhill switchbacks shortly after. I made sure he regretted that mistake  :whistling: nothing makes you as uncomfortable as hearing someone's hub ticking and braking heavily behind you. We didn't see them again. Probably makes me a chop as well.

Sounds like you can handle yourself just fine

Yeah don't get hung up on the P*&pholle. W2W is still one of the best events in the country....for now
