I have seen a few Mercer threads and they look beautiful but I surely they must be very expensive considering they are custom made.

"Rather expensive"

Sit down, relax, breath and only then ask for a price.

I know they are good bikes, etc, get what you pay for etc, etc but wow,

I don't have the world of experience with steel hard tails, but have owned a Cotic Solaris single speed, and currently own a Cotic Solaris Max with 650b+ wheels (interchangeable with 29") and a 140mm fork. I only have good things to say about the brand - their frames are really well thought out, and the local support from Matt is legendary - I would highly recommend giving him a call and chatting about what you need.

As for Cotic's 650b options - the Soul and BFE are both great options depending on how rowdy you want to get.

Although.... those Pipedream bikes are the stuff of dreams - really awesome looking, and if shipping doesn't turn out to be too expensive would be a consideration for me in future.

I think the type of riding I do lends itself to 27.5 more. Short rides, max 35km, that consist of mainly technical singletrack, not that I am very skilled at it, but that's another story.

Also I am a retro grouch who loves my current 26er but its starting to show its age and tire selection is getting very limited.

As a fellow Retro Grouch, I totally understand how difficult it can be to find the ride quality of a 26" steel frame. I still ride my Goat and love every second.

I think that 650b is a very sensible size for your replacement (29r be damned!).

Would you not consider Titanium as a frame material or does the cost put you off?

I am considering upgrading my bike next year and want a steel framed hardtail. What frames are available locally? The only 3 I can find that are available locally are:

1. Momsen ST-R29 - https://momsenbikes.com/the-return-of-the-st-r-29-hardtail-steel-is-real/

2. Cotic - http://www.cotic.co.za

3. Contraband Rogue - http://www.contrabandbikes.com

I want a frame suited to 27.5in wheels so the Momsen is out, The contraband is suited to both wheel sizes but I dont like the eccentric BB so that leaves something from Cotic. Surely there must be more options.

My first choice would be a On One 45650B but as far as I can tell you need to order it from the UK and the shipping cost is almost as much as a frame and that is before VAT is added.

Niner SIR 9 with 27.5 plus tyres FTW.

I was very happy in my dealings with Pipedream when I bought my Ti Skookum. They always answered their emails, communicated the shipping delays, and I still get an email once a year, asking if I'm still happy with the frame. I am, BTW, 5 years down the line.

To answer a few questions, I am just toying with the idea at the moment. No budget has been set but it would probably be around R5k so not looking for anything exotic. I have a baby on the way so need to keep costs down.

I am not against a mass produced bike but would prefer to buy local, as the shipping cost for a one off frame does seem a little excessive, at least with the "On One" example. I am not sure how Aramex works but am looking at other shipping options. I travel to Germany fairly regularly for work so may be able to ship it there and bring it back.

To be honest I kind of have my heart set on the On One 45650b as it appears it ticks all the boxes, is reasonably priced and gets decent reviews.I just wish there was a local agent. I have also requested pricing from Cotic for the Soul and BFe.

That's really good to hear. Those bikes seriously make me drool - and I might just have to splash out in the near future!
