Hardly the most robust scientific approach. After all you can only take an average when you have 2 or more replicates, and as for standard deviation or otherwise, 3 or more.

I think so. Pacing yourself and your effort is an important part of it. Exam technique is vital, otherwise you burst out the gate at 6w/kg and then before you know it, you are a limp noodle hanging over the bars.

Maybe a question for John specifically but open to all who ride with younger people who use powermeters. I am talking about the 18 - 23 range.

Do you see a trend whereby this age group has become overly reliant on powermeters? The kids out here on the continent are C for seriously strong, but on several occasions this year, I have heard youngsters writing off their race at the start line.

"No powermeter today"/"Powermeter acting funny"/"Powermeter not working" and its like they have already resigned themselves to a mediocre ride. Without the numbers, they seem almost lost?

Simple answer is yes. No question and then add that the Garmin is flat and all hell breaks loose.

I am also a strong advocate that racing is about feel. Not numbers 90% of the time. People often ask me should I focus on 250W for the race? My question is no just go race. If its to hard you blow and have a bad race, if its to easy and you could of done 270W you could of gone 3min faster and been 7th not 10th. If you feel good, attack if not, hide and so on.

Where power does come in handy is at a stage race like Epic, you don't want a IF of over .85 for the hour, if you can control that you should have a good stage ahead. if not, there not many bushes to hide under.

I find the opposite. Power meters hold people back. They are scared of seeing numbers that they know mean trouble.

I rode Epic with a person twice that age, and the best day we had was the one where his power meter wasn't working. Rest of the time he kept holding himself back, complaining he was "putting out too much power".

not a numbers guy and have never ridden with a power meter.

HR is simple enough & works well for me.

I know it's off topic but I believe that power meters should only be used for training and pacing.  With pacing I mean like a TT or the like.  They do help track your performance post race.

The first race I had power on the Garmin main screen, I kept on seeing 400 to 500W. Was convinced that I would blow up.

Power is now on the second screen, and hardly look at my Garmin in a race, other than to check distance and time.

Power and especially IF has it's uses in a race.

But it is only ONE piece of information in the whole equation.

It contributes to the strategy, it does not replace it.
