I have seen a whole lot of reviews and me coming from years of mtb to road, the one by option provided by Sram is on my list of to do's but is it worth having on the road like on the mtb?

Is the front mech dead? Is there a future for the front derailleur on modern road bikes?

Your choice of front ring and cassette range is critical, otherwise you lose out on either top or low end gears.

Similar conversation for going 1x on the mtb. Whats the advantage?

Front mech shifting on road bikes is really good these days. Swapping your 11-28 cassette for a 10-42 seems strange. That will weigh much more than the one ring and front mech that you don't need ant more.

A bit of repetition between these articles:

There is a road team using a 1x groupset next year.

if all the typical necessary gear ratios are covered, why wouldn't it work? It's then only a question of reliability. and maybe little time on behalf of the rider to get over some separation anxiety ;)

The jumps between your gears will also be bigger. As an mtb rider I am 110% coverted to 1x. But the big jumps between gears on a 1x road bike may sway me to stick with 2x. It will be harder to find your cadence "sweet spot".

A big advantage of 1x for me on an mtb is having less chain drop and chain slap over rough terain, not something that really happens on the road - so I personally wouldn't convert my 2x road bike to 1x. I may however consider it if I was buying a new bike.

I dare say, if you had started out with a cassette that had big jumps, you would have adapted. But you evolved around the status quo in cassette steppings, so the bigger jumps will be unfamiliar, but not something one wouldn't be able to adapt to. However, i'm not advocating just sucking up what's being marketed.

As the market for the product grows and matures, various cassette steppings will come to the fore to provide more choice. 3T already has two of its own 9-32T cassettes based on single tooth steppings either in the lower or upper halves of its cassette, so they are already delving into a perceived gap in the 1x road biking market. Good on them.

Unfortunately, most road bikes are being bought by mountain bikers looking for an alternative.

These guys want mountain bike qualities on their road bikes which is why we are starting to see ridiculous things like disc brakes and 1xdrive trains on road bikes.

Even granny gears

Next is 730mm wide bars on road bikes too.

I don't have much to add to this thread , I ride only mtb and will stick with 1x forever

BUt

The other day at work we had and Pinarello F8 that was just.... f0k ... it was nice , Electronic campag , carbon mavics , carbon finishing the works

I fitted O-symetric rings and took it to test ride , now keep in mind ovals ( and o-symetric are quite hectic) shift crap

When I pressed that front mech button I hardly knew it had gone over except of course the heavier pedaling , like CVT for bikes

So if you want smooth shifting for the front go electronic

Yasssss still thinking of that bike

Ha ! I'll never own something like that .... dared to ask what the campy powermeter costs ...35k   that's roughly what I have in my entire bike

Great for a cx/commuter bike - doesn't have the gearing range for a road race bike - despite having a cx bike with 1x (42 front and 42/11 rear) on - my road bike still runs 53/39 on the front and 25/11 on the rear

Disc brakes on road bikes are a good thing - A very good thing.

I'm sure there are more effective ways to drop weight on your bike if that is the intention.

The gear range will be reduced, without getting rather creative at the back

Let's see how they do in the pro races next year.... and whether they stick with 1x or revert to 2x

no converting that bike without a bit of pratleys... pretty sure the riders have taken it up and down a few hills and know what they're in for.
