the most glaringly obvious fail in that picture is that they are riding on the tar when there is a massive piece of gravel to their left.

This does not matter, they have a rigth oto the road. Just not the way they are using it

When a faster rider is approaching and calls passing on the right move to the Le F t and and don'  t complain when they pass on the left because you would not move over. Don't be a chop. When in doubt apply common sense.

And there is the problem.

People do not have it, or do not use it due to various reasons.

It is even pointless to confront people like this as they will just tell you to F""" off, mind your business etc.

Sadly I'd agree with this in my experience. Maybe I'm just not tactful enough, or have enough moral fibre, to keep engaging with people.

(I gave up after a mate v politely suggested 2 okes moved off the road to fix a puncture and was told to F-off. This whilst riding stage 3 of The Jock last year.....)

The way my thinking goes is like this. When I ever ride on the road (which is extreeeeeeeeemly seldom), I don't give a f..k what the law says. My only goal is self-preservation. When I'm dead or paralysed the law ain't going to help me for sh 1 t.

it's like runners running with their back to the traffic. Sure they've got the right to be there, but are they seriously so thick or do they value their life so little?

and what would that have accomplished - would he have been sympathetic?

Do you think that confronting those two would have helped or possibly made it worse?

And the again, the OP is not the problem here, the guys riding like that are.

So because the guy was riding like an idiot we immediately assume he is going to get aggro if you advise him to ride more towards the left?

or the okes riding the R27 on the road when there is a cycle lane 2 meters to their left? But I guess the cycle lane isn't cool. Well being dead isn't cool either. But hey the law says they can cycle there.

Saw a lady running like this yesterday. There is a perfectly fine paved section next to the road as well

I think know there are just a lot of stupid people out there.

If you genuinely think the particular cyclist on the right was 'taking' the lane to protect himself and his mate, I'll have what you're smoking. Looks more like he was having a fat chat and riding one-handed with poor situational awareness. We've all, I'm sure, had such brain-farts and whether it's appropriate or useful to name & shame here, and whether they're other more effective approaches are fair questions, but let's not try and fabricate a feel-good version of dubious behaviour....

situational awareness.

Bingo!

If all and sundry had this there would be little to no road accidents.

Ride/drive AWARE and all our problems will go away.

This will probably cop me some flack but having lived in a cycle friendly country for around a year here is my list of issues with SA roads...

1) No cycling infrastructure - kinda self explanatory.

2) ME ME ME ME ME ME mentality. The majority of people on the road want to have all the rights but none of the responsibilities. All of the advantages but none of the disadvantages.

3) Scant regard for the law.

4) Lack of attention on the road - texting, chatting on the phone, day dreaming - there are too many distracted road users.

5) Self entitlement - similar to ME ME ME ME but road users with expensive gear seem to think they should get right of way.

6) Bravado - so much ego out there - too many riders that seem to think being right and dead is better than wronged and alive.

Just some food for thought - have at it you lot :-)

Ummm yes... unfortunately the reality of society today.

yes you as the other person on the road need to be aware that he is riding there...

Bingo! and then they wonder why incidents happen when a lot of the time both parties are at fault.
