Event Name: Swartberg100 Gran Fondo 2018
When: 28 April 2018
Where: Prince Albert, Western Cape
Category: Cyclocross

South Africa's premier Gravel Bike Race.

The Swartberg100 Gran Fondo starts and ends in Prince Albert, arguably one of the most attractive Karoo towns in South Africa, it covers 170 km of which there are 3 gravel sectors covering 79 km. The final climb is over the gravel Swartberg Pass, a relentless climb of 28 km, the last 8 km being on gravel with gradients of 13% in places.

The Swartberg100, in true South African tradition, will be one of the toughest Gran Fondo's in the world. We have created a course that goes back to the days of old when mountain passes were all gravel and brave cyclists climbed them on single speed bikes weighing in at 16 kg. A course that allows us to pit our modern training knowledge and technology against an old foe, a road surface that isn't always friendly.

I hope this is on and not cancelled this year.... Really looking forward to it!

event organizer says its on, everyone that entered that didnt request a refund at the time of the event being cancelled due to the road being washed away had their entry fee carried over. in fact the email just came through now saying go ahead & re-enter yourself with a promo code to bypass the payment option.

I rode it yesterday. It's bloody tough on a singlespeed.

CX bike with gears would be much better

yep was a breeze on my monstercross in 2016 just a pity I had a brake failure. The winner was even on a disc road bike.

What does the pass look like after the flood?

Can choose between the Epic with 2.0 Fastracks, Crux with 40c Ramblers or GrandFondo with 40c Sawtooths.

The pass should be fine but alot can change in 4 months.

The Epic would of course do the job perfecly but what better opportunity will there be to check if the GrandFondo does what it says on the box ?

Absolutely! Think I’ll take both and make the call the on the weekend of the race.

I’m no off-road Redbull champ, so the risk vs reward of speed vs control is my biggest conundrum.
