Can you not run a 36 or 40 at the back ?

I have a medium cage XO derailleur, 11-32  paired with 50/34 but for for touring with a load (and mountains) I fit a ??-40 cassette.

I certainly don't cross chain 50-40 but otherwise I am fine with it.

ps, I rode up there with a mate on his CX bike and a compact crank and 30 at the back and he coped fine.

I am sure I could try getting a 36 on there, might be the easiest. Not sure the RD could handle it, let me try.

Thanks, makes sense....

Currently both gravel bike options have 50/34 11:32 Shimano 105 setups.

I checked and saw Shimano does a CX crank but it’s small blade is still a 34.

What’s the best way to get a slightly smaller chain/m ring or crank on there? I’m happy with the 50 but maybe a 32 would be nice.

Fit a Wolflink to your RD and run a 42t MTB cassette?

Same ratios on mine, considering SLX or XT rear derailleur with 11-40 or 11-42 cassette.

And this would pair seamlessly with the 105 shifter?

If both are 11 speed then it will apparently work seamlessly but I am waiting for confirmation. Will let you know.

Nope. Road shifter not compatible with MTB RD. There are two options, either the Wolftooth goatlink and use the same 105 RD, or a Wolftooth tanpan which is a cam device to alter the shift indexing so that a road shifter works with a MTB RD. I run 1x11, shimano hydraulic shifter with M8000 XT med cage RD with the tanpan and works great.

Why did you go TanPan and not road link with 105 long cage?

I am going 1x on my CX but have Shimano R785s, so going roadlink instead with a 11-40 cassette
