Cyclist causes accident

This morning my farther was driving on North Rand Road at 04:45 in Boksburg when a cyclist deliberately jumped a traffic light against the main flow of traffic (cnr North Rand Road and Trichardt Road)

Fortunately for the cyclist, my father saw the guy and managed to swerve to avoid possibly killing him. In the process of swerving, he drove into a palisade fence. The cyclist road off without even checking to see is the occupants in the vehicle were hurt. Luckily my father was OK, but the car needed to be towed away.

You often see comments on the HUB about how bad drivers are, showing zero respect for cyclist on the road. As a cyclist, I have experience this too. Which cyclist hasn't been affected by road traffic?

We forget that the rules of the road also apply to cyclist. These rules are intended to keep cyclists and other road users safe on the roads. By ignoring traffic lights and stop signs, we not only endanger our own lives but put other lives at risk.

This could have ended very differently if my farther swerved and collided with a pedestrian, cyclist or another vehicle.

I think it's disgusting that this cyclist causes the accident and doesn't bother to stop and check if the driver is OK.

Was this a cyclist or a commuter? Not sure how many "cyclists" ride on the wrong side of the road. But those commuter okes, jeez I swear them all the time on moddeerfontein road. They come from tembisa towards greenstone(I think they all builders in the greeenstone area). I ride in the yellow lane up the hill and they come straight at you down the hill.

Glad your Dad is ok.

TWO sides to the coin ...

So easy for "us" to complain when it is the "cars" that are in the wrong ....

Sadly way to many bicycles, both "cyclists" and "commuters" that are all too often in the wrong.

Saw two cyclists (not commuters) this morning creating a dangerous situation .... but heaven forbid either one got touched by a car .....

would be nice if car drivers were to "Think Bike", equally nice if those on two wheels were to "Think Car".

PS - Nice of the cyclists outside Durbanville on Sunday morning to make way for the cars.  The current road works near Meerendal is creating a very dangerous situation !!  Nice to see some of the cyclists along this section are alert and taking steps to stay safe.

I'm actually starting to get rather irritated with some of the cyclists in the area.

1) there is a certain group who like to dress in black and think everyone from cyclists to motorists must get out of their way. I see them most sundays, heads down trying to beat their STRAVA segments.

2) Saturday there was a guy on North Rand rd, cruising along, no hands on the bars but in the middle of the left lane.

Thats why I have a dashcam, just clears up any confusion after the fact.

That's when all of the sudden the stories change. Especially when the one party didn't know the other had a dashcam. They becoming more common and I think it'd a good thing.

I just think cyclist (and I include myself) don't think in terms of the possibility of hurting others by ignoring traffic rules. We always concern ourselves about being hit or hurt. Your irresponsible actions could injury or kill others...just another point of view.

Works well at roadblocks too, cop's (looking for a "cold drink") attitude changes quickly when they see you have a dashcam.

All road users must take responsibility for their actions and that is one of the big problems in SA.  Pedestrians and cyclist should also be fined and held accountable for illegal actions on the road. That is why I rather refer to road users rather than a specific group of road users.

Good luck with your dad to explain to the insurance that he avoided an accident.

Make a call to the cycling club / shop who they ride for... They don't like having the publicity and mention that a name and shame is likely if the behaviour doesn't stop

I've done that in the past. With these guys I never bothered to check if the jersey was from a club or not.

Can you please recommend one? I'm keen on a dashcam but no idea what to look for.

My wife and I were lent road bikes on Saturday so we went along and did a ride with one of the Cyclelab Fourways groups.

These groups have taken a lot of critism in the past about riding through red robots. The ride marshalls of our group made a point of reminding all the riders that they stop at all red robots and stop streets.

On our way down Ceder Road near Fourways Shopping Centre we were stopped at a red robot when a group of Cycleworx MTBers came past us and went through the intersection.
