Just convert the unused golf courses to trails.....

Or have both, Steyn City and Eye of Africa vibe. Waterfall Estate etc etc

A lot of these estates punt the trail running/jogging tracks too...

Being an all rounder is the new golf...

As someone who plays golf and cycles and has applied the n+1 principle to both, I can categorically say that golf is way cheaper than cycling but the toys for cycling are way cooler

You must be a government minister to afford such expenses.

From a different angle cycling is nowhere close to the new golf for the Pro cyclists and in RSA not even the new running!

Consider prize money in golf worldwide - cycling does not come close. In RSA consider prize money for the Comrades or 2 oceans and incentives for record time. I don't know what the Cape Town cycle tour prize money is, as it so low its not publish (from what I recall).

In RSA running get about 10 o 20 times more prize money for big events compared to cycling. Thus in terms of prize money cycling is no where close to the new golf - not surprising the Cape Town Cycle tour along with many other events is an ageing community and thus the sport has plateau or dropping in numbers.

We've looked in the past and struggled to get any reliable, meaningful data about the size of the market.

For what it's worth, the "cycling is the new golf" boom kicked in around 2012, but on anecdotal evidence that growth seems to have slowed.

Edit: For those dismissing the now very tired billing as the "new golf", the OPs point appears to be more about the lack of market data to support this assertion, old as it may be.

Even respected financial publications make these sort of claims without any proper data to back up their supposed "findings". Well at least nothing more than he said...

I read this as applying to MTB, not road, because that's where the real market growth took place and the stage race industry is massive and expensive. I agree with you on the road numbers - I think MTB is to blame for that. And in CT the total absence of any pre CTCT fun races in and around the Southern Suburbs which I found a huge incentive to get out on the road bike back in the day.

Camel golf bikes are available on our golf courses here in SA

With THAT head angle I doubt that it will be accepted by the baggy community... Also no dropper...

Trail running is the new "it" sport. it used to be lekker, and races was chill and people just run what they brung and had fun. Now the trail running scene is even more gadget and instagram focused than the enduro crowd.

Is it easier to become a pro golfer or a pro cyclist?

I would possible say yes but don't know the number of top golfers in the world - there only about 30 (maybe 50) top cyclist in the world who earn "decent" money. Most TDF rider are not paid that well and the prize money at the TDf for 21 days of work is quite low compared to golf.

I am sure however its way harder to get an F1 contract compared to cycling. But running and cycling are comparable (maybe RSA as they both club sports) thus I do believe my post above has merit!

How do you transport your golf sticks?(I know they are clubs, just made me think of when Jeremy Clarkson called them sticks on topgear)

There's a store room for golf bags. Many people leave their clubs there even if travelling by car
