Creaking sound...

Getting a creaking sound as I am cycling, originally it sounded like it was coming from front suspension, but when I stop, and depress the suspension, both front and back, I hear nothing. So it seems that it is only when I am pedaling... what could possible be the problem...

It was fine, until I lifted the seat ... I assume that I have a better pedal stroke because the seat was too low... but boy... the constant creaking sound is going to drive me to drink...

any thoughts or suggestions

Since you moved the seat or seat post, that could be the cause. Was it creaking before you moved the seat? If not then that would be the problem a reckom.

grease axles

clean seat rails

could be pedal cleat interface

Bottom bracket ( although it gets blammed often and is seldom the issue )

Clean headset bearings

I had a similar problem.

It could be the seatpost rubbing/flexing against the frame.

Take the seatpost out and give it a decent basing of grease, if its carbon make sure to use carbon paste.

The reason why it sounded like the fork was the sound echoing through the top tube.

That should do the trick! hope it works

Standard check is the elimination theory:

Stand, sit, lean forward, pedal hard etc - all of these eliminate areas. If that doesn't isolate it then...

Typical problem areas are:

PressFit BB - any bike with one of these should be burnt.

"Dry" skewers - QR, 12mm or 15mm - take them out and give them a really light greasing on the shaft and thread.

Seat pillar - take it out - light grease - put back.

Seat post rails - esp if they're carbon. Remove, light grease, put back. Don't forget to mark the position and angle so you can put it back the same.

Good luck!

Axles

After cleaning and re-greasing everything someone on here gave me the tip to clean and tighten the rear scewer as much as possible.

This solved my clicking/creaking bike (stock giant wheels)

What he said.

If your rear axle isnt tight enough, it creaks like crazy.

Knees.... Could be the fact that I have two left knees :)  Seriously, thanks guys for the input... At least I have somewhere to start.

I have a feeling that it might be the seat post, that is the only thing that I changed, prior to that, there wasn't any...

Let you know when I find it :)

I have a complete intolerance for any noise on my MTB or roadbike.

On my MTB I have solved issues by:

  • Greased BB bearings. Despite being a brand new bike the grease had dried out. Pryed off dust seals and re-greased
  • As said above, Q20's my saddle rails where they enter the saddle, greased rails in clamp.
  • Greased seatpost tube in frame
  • Greased bars and stem and steerer at contact points
  • Cleaned and greased behind derailleur hanger
  • Cleaned and greased where both front and rearwheels/skewers make contact
  • Cleaned and greased all suspension pivots
  • I even removed and re-greased my jockey wheels
  • Oh and pedal shafts have been greased and springs lubed....
  • (In essence, eveything except the valve caps....)

Contrary to what a LBS up the road said is not possible, I have a silent MTB.
