Peeps!

I have 2 q's:

1. Did anyone do the 95km Gravel Express this weekend? How does ou wapad compare to Breedts Neck?

I did.

Not comparable.

Breeds is both steeper and in much worse condition than the Ou wa pad.

OWP is much more like that little farm road between the game fences we descended on way out and climb on the way home.

Just (much) longer and with the congestion 3000 other riders on the same narrow stretch will cause. I reckon 90% of the walkers could ride it if they were alone but you only need one walker to start the rot as overtaking becomes tricky and getting going again difficult.

...fixed it for you

That last kick at the 90km mark is a KILLER!

It's actually a rather gentle climb, but coming at around 90 km's in makes it a brute of a hill. My advice is to drop the cadence and climb out the first 200 or so meters until that beast incline out of the river relaxes, and then it's time to put your head down, shut out the shouting from the legs, and keep a steady rhythm to the summit. Your reward is in the descent on the other side to the finish line.

I rode the route on my motorcycle (barring ou wapad.. becaue it's hectic and everyone walks it) two days prior, so that pomphuis climb was in the back of my mind the whole way I was riding on the event on my bicycle.

So luckily I was mentally prepared. I went into the race (that word not applicable to me) completely undertrained (as always) and found it very enjoyable.

The best part is the light south easter, the smell of the sea and of course the decisions about having a burger or a curry mince vetkoek and if it will be one or two or three cold ones!!!!!!!!
