The whole weekend i.e including the XCC or whatever its called was probably the best weekend of XCO since I cant remember when.  Nino has a big target on his back and its great to see him dodging the bullets.

His tactics were brilliant - put down the hammer early and tired out MVDP a bit, then used Forster as a useful obstacle to put between the two of them. A very different game to cyclocross. Even the crashes are worse I reckon.

As for Gaze - I am waiting to see what is actually wrong with his arm but right now I think he's a bit of a woosie and a drama queen. I'll happily recant and restore him to actual man status if he has actually bust a bone. Bruising won't do though.   It would have been great if Cooper had actually won, but i guess and almost tie with Schurter is good enough for some mud in Gaze's eye.

We were rooting for Neff but she met her match. Think her tactics at the finish line were a bit weak especially when looking at how Nino handled the same situation.

Oh ya forgot. Are MTB XCO racers more like soccer players and road cyclists like rugby players? Jus asking because I have seen many battered roadies some with broken bones finishing very long road stages in agony while guys like Gaze fall over once and retire while barely looking injured... :-)

Must say, the ladies racing is where all the action is at for me ... though I still need to watch the full race from the weekend, it is just that there are some young ladies who are starting to blossom and then someone like Gunn-Ritta who is still up there teaching the youngsters how to hang tough.

The personalities of the ladies also seem more "real" than many of the men ... it is great to see a young mother of 2 kids dragging the young ones around with her while she is racing, and RACING is what she is doing.....Brandau is going to be someone to watch ... and Tauber....and Keller.

Then Kate Courtney is there, but need to round off and gain a little more racing experience with the Elites?

Neff and Langvad ... well we know they can race

Pauline is getting stronger and racing well

Belomoina coming back from a hip gedoente is also doing very well

The list goes on and I for one am looking forward to the rest of the season.

Okay, shame, sounds really not that serious. (He remains a woosie.)

Woosie asshole whatever he is..I don't care... We need solid competition at the top end and he adds to that... Let's hope he is there for the next one...

Dont get me wrong. I was sorry to see Gaze crash/flat. I would have loved to see the three or four of them battling up front. We were robbed of an even better spectacle.

On that topic, and including the XCC .... it seems the number of Spaz Tyre flats far outweighed the rest of the field!

Or did I miss something?

I am beginning to wonder what Gaze's reaction would have been if the tables were turned at Stellenbosch, and he unclipped and Nino took the win. I am going with something akin to having a cry somewhere secluded before going on a twitter rant that he was the better rider on the day.

Strange that Nino opted not to go that route. Oh ja, he's a man, and an olympic gladiator at that. He doesn't need to.

Watched all 4 races live on RedBull TV. Nailbiting and exciting racing. Loved it.

If Stellenbosch is on the calendar again in 2019 I am seriously considering making a trip down to spectate if I can.

Well then you in luck, the Stellies event was secured for 2 seasons, so 2019 has a race for sure. So, start saving, and come spend the week in CT, what with the World Cup, Epic and "Argus" all happening around that time. Best week to be in Cape Town.

Nah, Spaz tyres like to flat. I had one a week ago on my Purgatory. Had to stop and apply snottie and bomb before it was fine again.

My thoughts as well. I will certainly not want to ride that tires in future races.

Well said. I still can't get myself to like Gaze after he's middle finger incident, and after he's fall he sweared on live tv in the pits. Also could not face the camera when he retired.

Well done to Cooper giving he's all and having a brilliant race. Nino was flawless as always and he's hard racing and tactics caused Van der Poel and Gaze to make unforced errors in technical areas due to Nino pushing them beyond their limit.

What a brilliant XCO season thus far and can't wait for the next round.

i read van der Poel started the race with the injured wrist, he said the crash was on the easier part of the course, but he was trying to manage the pain ie. he probably should have not started

Did not know that, but that fall looked like a lack of concentration due to fatigue
