2018 Carnival City Macsteel National Classic - the road race

We are excited to announce that our 2018 road race (the 35th edition) will feature a completely new route, with a phrase we're going to claim: Traffic-free zones or Reduced Traffic zones. While we would love to present a race with FULL ROAD CLOSURE, we have to work with what we have - traffic-free, or reduced-traffic zones.

We are still working with the relevant traffic departments in Ekurhuleni to finalise sections of the route that will feature roads that will be closed to traffic, while the rest of the route has been finalised. We start outside Carnival City, as always, but head East towards Brakpan and Springs. From Springs, we take you South to Nigel on the R51, right then left on the R550 towards the R23. Shortly after the first sprint prime (hot spot 1), you'll turn left (to Heidelberg, 41Km) instead of the right turn back to Carnival City like previous years, then right on the R103 just before Heidelberg. At the next 4-way stop, you'll turn left on the R550 towards Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, turning right on the road to Magagula Heights. A left turn, up a short drag to Diana Road to turn right. Diana Rd takes you back to the R550, where you'll turn left and ride over the second sprint prime (hot spot 2). At the 4-way intersection (R550/R23) you'll turn left and ride the final 14.5Km to the finish, which is the same as previous year. Total distance is 109Km (700m elevation).

The short route for the less fit, more social rider has been retained, and follows the first 42Km of the route described above. At the R23 riders will turn right to head back to Carnival City. Total distance is 58Km (367m elevation gain), so slightly shorter than before but by no means easier.

Water points remain the same as before (2 on the short route and 4 on the long route).

We've done away with the longer distance for the Elite, U23, Juniors and Vets - the primary reason is to do away with the delayed start times for the tandems, open groups and the shorter route. The race will start at 06:00 for the Elites, followed by the rest of the groups at regular intervals. All groups would be on the course by 08:10, allowing 5-10 minutes before the Elites return to the finish.

Developing riders

Our core objectives for the event is to (1) generate funds for charities in our area, (2) fund the development of cyclists, and (3) to ensure our event is safe. As part of objective 2, we will be offering a R100 discount for all riders aged 19 years and younger (as of 31 December 2018). This forms part of the Germiston Wheelers Cycle Club initiative to fund the development of cyclists.

All ages, U11, U13, U15, U17 and Juniors (both male and female), qualify for this discount. The usual online entry process needs to be followed, vetted by ID number to qualify for the discount, and is only valid for the road race.

Carnival City Macsteel MTB race

The MTB event will be the same as 2017, except for the chillier-than-normal weather we experienced last year (we hope). The route will remain the same (pending track conditions), with the option of 60Km, 34Km, 6 or 12Km family friendly, or a 1/2/3Km ride for the kids.

The race will start at 07:00, with the A-seeded 60Km riders, followed by the rest of the groups/distances at 5 minute intervals.

Trail Run

The trail run had about 10 participants in 2017, mostly due to weather, line entries only, and a last minute decision to host a trail run.

For 2018, the trail run will take place on Sunday, while the road race is taking place. Start time is 08:00, and runners have the option of a 5.5Km (1 lap) or 11Km (2 laps) race, on trails inside the Carnival City precinct.

We’re still working with last minute details with a potential new sponsor, and will launch this event in July.

Post-race hospitality

For both days, Saturday and Sunday, we will have the hospitality area offering a place to unwind after your race, enjoying food and drinks and the company of fellow riders. Prize giving takes place in the hospitality area, as well as the lucky prize draws (taking place through the day).

Clubs are invited to erect their gazebos in pre-booked sites on the Carnival City Festival Lawns.

Developing riders

Part of Germiston Wheeler’s initiative to “Develop Riders” has been extended beyond their local community to include a 30% discount for all riders who are 19 years of age and younger at 31 December 2018. The initiative is planned to help develop and encourage young riders in the sport.

All ages, U11, U13, U15, U17 and Juniors (both male and female), qualify for this discount. The usual online entry process needs to be followed, vetted by ID number to qualify for the discount, and is only valid for the road race.

Ja, we can’t promise full closure and then not deliver. The whole route is based on giving motorists an alternative route on the day... getting them to buy in will be the biggest challenge.

  • 3 weeks later...

We will be riding the route in 2 weeks time, and then a few times more in August, September and October.

There will be open invites to anyone wanting to join us for one/all of the rides (not race pace).

We are riding from “home”, so will have 151km by the time we finished.

Entered.

Frosty: any chance you can give us a link to an interactive map, or a gpx file?

Nvm. I just mapped it quickly. Strava Ride with GPS

More or less correct... the actual start mat will change from your map, while the finish is about 100m before the entrance to CC (like it was up to about 2010).

We’re working on a few more surprises, that will be announced when finalised.
