Good morning guys and girls,

On the morning of the 3 June, Robert participated in a race in Cape Town. We were in a small break away, when all of a sudden we just heard the screaming sound of tires, a "bakkie" drove into the back of the 7 man bunch and took Rob out from behind.

He has since been in hospital, undergoing operations, etc. Unfortunately he doesn't have medical aid. Sean Lucien then started a campaign, BackaBuddy.

Please see the link below, if there is anyone that can make a donation, it will really be appreciated.

Is the driver not insured? His insurance (or he personally) should cover the medical costs if he hit them from behind. Just asking out of interest - definitely nothing against the campaign at all.

Was it a CSA sanctioned race? If it was he should be able to claim from CSA for some of the medical costs.

Yes, the race was sanctioned and his girlfriend is busy with CSA. Problem is that from the understanding this can be  a lengthy process.

For Races I do Sanlam GoCover.  I have not yet needed to claim (thank goodness), so I cannot comment on the efficiency of that, but a direct commercial relationship with your insurer must surely be better than this middleman thing via CSA, especially given the perceived quality of CSA's operational management.

Get well soon Robert

is this Robert du preez the rugby coach?

Nope. he’s the cycling type of Robert !

Really great guy. Very solid on 2 wheels. Managed to pop in with him recently. He in good spirits but this accident will unfortunately set him back for a bit...

Keen to see how the race organisers respond to this one. Bottom line, they failed to plan appropriately.

Hi Guys.

I just found this post and I really appreciate the support and advice. Luckily being a road accident. All the medical bills don't come to me. They go straight to the road accident fund. The crash was just under 3 months ago and today the doctor says I still have another 3 months of recovery to go.

Thanks again all.

Good luck with the recovery, my anecdotal experience tells me that positive frame of mind is the most powerful tool you have.

Show us some x-rays!
